Population latest: Less Thais but the number of foreigners goes UP! More Thai women than men

 

 

Many people especially on online forums have suggested that foreigners were leaving Thailand in droves but the latest population figures seem to suggest otherwise. 

 

The number of Thais has gone down but the number of foreigners in the kingdom has actually gone up slightly.

 

There was also continuing good news for men - there are even more Thai women to chose from!

 

Channel 7 reported that a falling birth rate was mainly responsible for there being 386,037 less people in 2020 compared to 2019.

 

An infographic showed that in 2019 there were 66.5 million people and last year there were 66.2 million. 

 

In 2019 there were 65.6 million Thais and 940,000 non Thais. 

 

Last year there were 65.2 million with Thai nationality and 950,000 foreigners up by 10,000.

 

In 2019 there were 32.1 million Thai men and 490,000 male foreigners. There were 33.5 million Thai women and 450,000 female foreigners.

 

Last year the number of Thai men had dropped to 31.8 million while the numer of non-Thai males had gone up to half a million. 

 

Females of Thai nationality dropped to 33.3 million last year but the number of foreign women remained at 450,000. 

 

Areas with the highest population remained as before with Bangkok the highest followed by Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen.

By my calculations that is only 10,000 difference but again Thai math's over exaggerate the numbers .

In my 14 years here there has never been a Census; so how do they calculate their figures ?

Well spotted. That has now been corrected.

If our village is a reflection on the rest of the country the population is going to be very small soon. This year so far in a village of 250 we have lost 3 in road accidents, 1 murder, 1 suicide and 3 to old age. No births this year and no new foreigners, but 2 fine looking pattaya returnees are back until things improve in pattaya.

I believe this country has about 480,000 "stateless" persons - which is about half of the "non-Thai" number.

Not sure I'd want to live in a village where you have a 1% chance of a violent death in 2 months

Increase in foreigners might be people switching to non o visas from tourist visas due to COVID lockdown

Did they further calculate the amount of thai men that are ladyboys?

fewer.  it's a countable number.

The term foreigners includes migrant workers. So, how is this relevant to anything? 

 

What we all want to know is, what is the real expat population? Then and now?

Every Thai  has to  be named in a housebook ........ the computer just needs to count the entries.

Ah ah, so the truths finally out. The infographic  shows there are 386,037 less Thais than a year ago.  I knew the mortality rate for Covid-19 was being reported incorrectly.

You're right there. Ignoring the (declining) birthrate, that's about 14 people per province per day that have died.

One more reason to import foreign men 5555555. They forgot to add in this article ,Half of the Thai men are ladyboys....so they need us guys!

400,000 drop in Thai population during the Covid-19 year but only 83 by the virus, Hmmm?

If foreigners went home in droves then any increase must be due to Thais changing nationality (didn't think they were allowed to do that).

And you should talk nicely to the surgeon who specialises in reattaching penises. Apparently they are vey good at that in Thailand due to a lot of practice.

I must say I rarely see any female farangs. Maybe the women are from Laos or Cambodia.

I don't know how true this is and as others have said there may be a link to undocumented covid deaths and the usual high number of road deaths in Thailand but I was under the impression that populations very rarely go down. The problem that arises is that the population increase slows down so that the proportion of older people increases in relation to younger ones which brings with it issues with financial and care distribution. 

 

I'd also suggest that looking at the change over such a short time scale and particularly during a pandemic probably doesn't help much.
