PHUKET:-- A veil of silence has been dropped on the investigation into an accident last month that involved a drunken Phuket police officer who tried to flee the scene in his car after hitting one car, sending it colliding into another car in front.

Immediately after the incident came to light, only after a video was posted online, Phuket Provincial Police Chief Maj Gen Pornsak Nuannu confirmed that he had ordered Thalang Police Chief Lt Col Phisit Chuenphet to investigate the incident.

The officer involved in the incident, Lt Nikorn Songkhao, is assigned to the Thalang Police, Gen Pornsak explained.

Absolutely nothing.

No real surprise here like most things here the police are as corrupt as the government TIT

Misunderstanding.........all just a misunderstanding in the land of misunderstandings. As running away from an accident, especially when intoxicated, then turning up when sober is standard operating procedure in this country, he only thought he was doing what is laid down in the law books.

Let us be honest, they call him a Police Officer, but we all KNOW men dressed in Brown Uniforms and in the main, ignorant of the law and corrupt, now in most countries we would call them thugs, but here we call them Police officers. HE RAN AWAY TO PROTECT HIS INVESTMENT , MADE WHEN PURCHASING THE RANK !!

Yes, this sort of thing only happens in Phuket!

Luckily, the rest of Thailand is crime free and policed by saints, so there are plenty of safe places to holiday elsewhere for the terminally timid.

Ah, the thread is about Phuket in case you did'nt notice! No need to apologize! I've booked my next holiday to Amnat Charoen.

The thread is about yet another drunken Thai cop trying to elude consequences, not about the specific location.  Do you really believe it only happens in one province?  Do you think it likely that such incidents get reported on in Phuket more because there are several high profile English language media outlets based there reporting on every minor incident?

Perhaps Police crime seems to be non existent where you are because it remains invisible.

Is this incident sufficient for yet another whinger to equate it with tourism safety and call for boycotts?

Yes...I am totally naive when it comes to police and places in Thailand...please keep us up to date with your superior knowledge.

My gf’s nephew was involved in an accident ( actually more of an incident ) involving a drunk off duty police.

He was pillion on his friends mc, sat stationary across the road from a busy downtown market  in a small town near Nakhon Sawan. The driver , apparently a snap decision, veered towards the kerb to park near the two boys on the mc. He misjudged it completely ( or brake failure ) and hit the rear of the mc , the bike was catapulted forward, first boy managed to hold on to the handlebars and eventually fell sideways with the bike. The nephew was left in mid air as the bike and rider shot out between his legs. The momentum caused him to do a half somersault and he hit the road chin first !!

An ugly mob gathered round and the drunk ( off duty ) cop was saved by his wife.

The police came and took him away.

The nephew had to have reconstruction surgery on his jaw and several teeth needed implants.

The cop paid 50k and rumoured to be working as normal.

to have a corrupt government you have to have a corrupt police department and judges other wise some people in the government would be locked up, a very common thing

I’m pretty sure the army is number one in that respect, but with the police close on their heels.

So you were aware that incidents such as the one in this thread do occur elsewhere.

What was the actual purpose of your attempt to slur the Phuket tourism industry?

Perhaps in your confident journey through these pages you could acquaint yourself with sarcasm from a direction other than outwards.

Sadly, this is nothing unusual.  The island needs a clean up, but this has been said for years and years.

It seems to happen more frequently in the locations which have a long history of  incompetence and corruption.

Perhaps it happens in other provinces, but I doubt it is as brazen and so in the face as it is in Phuket. When I live in Patong, I would take an afternoon walk and  often see the jet ski mobsters arguing with tourists accused of damaging the beat up jetskis. And there would often be policeman in proximity while damage claim was settled. Please don't tell me he was there to help the tourist.

I also stay in Kanchanburi, Auyutthaya and Prachuap Khiri Khan, but never see this type of incident and these are places that have many foreign visitors. 3 very different cities and maybe they have some problems, but never in all my years did I see them or hear from others  to the extent I  lived it in Phuket. Have you ever been to Ubon Ratchathani or Udon Thani main cities? Well I have, and I stayed there many times.  Issan gets much ridicule from arrogant people in South especially Phuket tourist industry who need the hardworking Issan people to staff industry which pays low wages.  I found myself much safer and with less to worry about from police than when I stayed in Phuket.  I also had much better value proposition from hospitality sector.

You are very tiresome with your constant accusation of "Attempts to slur tourism industry" with anyone who you disagree with. Phuket has problem with corruption and police for long time. It is Phuket that is begging for tourists to return. It is Phuket that is devastated and that needs to attract the visitors. There is a good reason why so many foreigners don't care about Phuket'  agony now or its financial difficulties and it is because they  remember the rip offs and the poor value proposition. The reality is that few places generate as much negativity as Phuket.  I do not believe people have the same level of negative opinion on other big tourism destination in Thailand like Krabi, or Chiang Mai or  Chumphon or Chiang Rai or Bangkok  or  Ayutthaya and on and on. Phuket negative image has been earned. How is it that Hua Hin or Chiang Mai which  has just as big english news media, doesn't have this negative image?

IMO, the only way Phuket will change is if it is forced to change through economic incentive.  Thailand is much more than Phuket and its mismanaged and abusive tourist trade.
