Sputnik V, new hope in fight against COVID

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Prime Minister has announced that the Russian government has agreed to a government-to-government deal to sell the Sputnik V (Vee) vaccine to Thailand. Let’s learn more about the Russian national vaccine in today’s special report.

Sputnik V was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Registered in August of last year by the Russian Ministry of Health as Gam-COVID-Vac. Sputnik V is an adenovirus viral vector vaccine. The "V" in the name is the letter V, and not the Roman numeral for five as some outlets initially reported.

Gam-COVID-Vac was initially approved for distribution in Russia on the preliminary results of Phase 1 and 2 studies eventually published in September of last year.

Gam-COVID-Vac is a viral two-vector vaccine based on two human adenoviruses – a common cold virus – containing the gene that encodes the full-length spike protein (S) of COVID-19 to stimulate an immune response.

The recombinant adenovirus types 26 and 5 are both used as vectors in the vaccine. They were biotechnology-derived and contain the coronavirus protein cDNA. Both of them are administered into the deltoid muscle: the Ad26-based vaccine is used on the first day and the Ad5 vaccine is used on the 21st day to boost the immune response.

Emergency mass-distribution of the vaccine began in December 2020 in multiple countries including Russia, Argentina, Belarus, Hungary, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates. By February 2021 over a billion doses of the vaccine had been ordered for immediate distribution globally.

Meanwhile, an interim analysis from the trial was published in The Lancet earlier this year, indicating 91.6% efficacy without unusual side effects.

According to the social media channel of Prime Minister and Defense Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to the deal, saying the move will further strengthen ties between Thailand and Russia.

General Prayut said he has already assigned the Ministry of Public Health to proceed with negotiations with the vaccine’s manufacturer.

  • So not even ordered yet!!   Expected delivery?    I'd actually accept this one (luckily too old for the Chinese stuff).   By the way the real Sputnik V was the the first

A small step in the right direction. Certainly on the basis of scientific evidence better than Sinovac. I think I'd actually have Sputnik V given the choice. Pfizer still my Number 1 choice though.

By the way the real Sputnik V was the the first space flight that actually returned living creatures back from space, unharmed. Doing further research on the habitability of space for humans, Sputnik 5 carried two dogs, Belka and Strelka.

As the virus is spreading at a rapid pace, as expected due to the incompetence of the government for not deferring Songkran, this doesn't sound to bad in its efficacy as opposed to what others were saying before about it. So looks like there might actually be light at the end of the tunnel with more choices of vaccines for those living in fear.

Another promise that a vaccine could be on its way to Thailand,  but no order has been placed yet... Typical Thai Government, far to slow to catch a cold...

delivery maybe 4th quarter this year. ! May registration for the eldery and handicapped /sick people who will get AZ in June and July and later Thai people between 18-59  will get Pfizer Moderna and Sputnik V.. as read in a post earlier.. by October... So plenty of time to set up a commitee and check talk and wait.

So the only choice is going to be taking these dictator vaccines from China and Russia. No transparency. No complete testing. Just buy and hope. At least with even the worst of the Western vaccines, AZ, you get transparency. If something goes wrong, there is no hesitation in making the information public and rectifying the situation. With the dictator vaccines, you hear nothing.

Haha. I swear to God, the funniest thing on THV are expat folks who have no choice but to get one commie jab or another))))

He d like to get a Nato approved vaccine, but simply can't have one)))

What a timeline, I love it!

Cool they may consider coming I guess it depends how busy they are at the time. ???? added a smiley for you as you seem to like them

Being ONLY in the negotiation phase of vaccine acquisition this late in the pandemic is like negotiating your salary after you've already worked 2 years on the job. Not only incompetence but patting themselves on the back for their buffoonery.

Yes but the common man gets fined 20k

Any more excuses? You have been proven wrong and should accept that instead of deflecting.

I get 2 shots Sputnik on march/april.Everything ok so far.

I'd take the Sputnik V if you put a gun to my head and ordered me. Or if it was the only way to ever get back on an airplane or travel freely again.

The Chinese CoronaVac? No way, no how. Who would take a vaccine that has barely better results than flipping a coin? And forgive me for saying, but I trust the Chinese about as far as I can throw a piano.

I am proven wrong? Where? Clean your eyes man...

It was in TV news that Putin got the vaccine. Also, it was his statement during speech last week on national TV.

However, my opponent BkkBrain said that Putin got no Sputnik injection - this is intentional lie.

Me too...

Many on this forum will argue about 'dictator vaccines', ask for proofs, post fakes... But no problem, bots don't need vaccination ????

Has agreed, doesn't this includes the price ? In my long working life I have never agreed to a deal without the price being part of it.

Like Putin, it simply doesn't matter. Why would anyone care what Putin said about the vaccine, many Russians don't.

To be clear, properly manufactured, Sputnik should be fine, its dual vector delivery is quite clever. Certainly nothing wrong with Russian science.
