A 33 year old trucker carrying trash from Nakhon Ratchasima for processing at the TPI cement factory said he experienced brake failure in heavy rain going down Klang Dong hill on Mitraphap Highway yesterday.

Heading towards Saraburi between KM markers 36 and 37 the truck trailer slammed into 27 other vehicles overturning several.

Klang Dong police and rescue officials from several foundations sealed the road in order to take care of victims who were taken to two area hospitals.

Somboon Waempracha was charged with negligent driving causing injury and damage to property.

Daily News did not report on the number of injuries.

The area is well known as an accident blackspot with many signs warning motorists to take care, notes Thaivisa.

Why is brake failure so common in Thailand ?

- Any somchai can become a lorry driver, there is no HGV training.

Is there really no HGV training here?

Is there just a test - no test - no training?

Does that mean you can drive an HGV with a car licence?

It's a straight question, as I don't know.

I'd like to think that he and his company will be hit with a fine of the total cost of all the cars, the hospital bills, compensation for stress and the police and emergency costs.

Reality though I am sure will be a lot , lot less. God knows how Thailand insurance companies survive

All you need to do is keep your foot lighty on the brakes, that will quickly

dry them out, I don't suppose the police ever check if these trucks really

have faulty brakes... It's just the drivers blame the truck, its never them

going too fast for the conditions, not changing gears to slow down,

regards Worgeordie

The Police would not know what they were looking for here.  To be able to check HGV and bus brake systems you need specialist trained officers. The average BIB would have no idea

What do you have to do to obtain your Class 1 over here?

Is "negligent driving causing injury" a criminal offence? Or is it just like most other driving offences?

The guy just had an accident.

He wasn't drunk.

He didn't run a red light. He wasn't charged with speeding. Although, I would say running a red light and speeding are both forms of negligent driving as well.

I am just curious about the "legality" of this charge, cos really it was just an accident (causing damage and, injury, but most accidents do)

You beat me to it. Exactly what I was going to ask. Having been an HGV driver in UK and Europe for 30 odd years I am totally amazed that any person can just drive a 50tonne truck around with no training!! Something not right here.

Almost nothing is right here !

In 45 years of driving, not only have I never had brake failure in any vehicle I have been driving , I have never heard of anyone in the west who has. Its a common excuse here, trotted out every time the driver has been drunk, drugged, on his phone or driving too fast.

It has been said many times before the problem is a failure to brake, for numerous reasons.

In the UK there is, or was, a charge of failing to maintain a vehicle in a roadworthy condition. I know cos I was hit with it on an old moggie. Suspension collapsed on one side. Went through the hedge and out the other side. Doh!
