Nigerian and his Thai wife arrested - ringleaders in Romance Scam

Two ringleaders of a so-called Romance Scam that defrauded elderly civil servants looking for love online have been arrested.

They are Niphaporn Phengnin, 29, and her Nigerian husband Namdi Promise, 36.

They were arrested at the Urban Living Nayao housing estate in Saraburi, central Thailand.

Their arrest followed the arrest of many people in a romance scam gang. These were people who had opened bank accounts and withdrew funds from ATMs.

They all fingered the Thai woman and the Nigerian as those central to the fraud.

They would pose as representatives of delivery companies in requesting victims pay tax on deliveries from abroad.

The scam will be familiar to anyone who has followed such stories in the news over many years. Victims are befriended on platforms like Facebook and Instagram before chat takes place on Line or via email.

Victims are told that expensive goods are being sent to them then people pose as officials to request payments to release the goods.

Daily News reported further in this case that most of the victims had been retired male and female civil servants who had been defrauded of 10 million baht.

Bangkok metropolitan police and other agencies were involved in the arrests with the Thai woman and the Nigerian charged with fraud.

It seems the normal way of living of most Nigerian people.

I find it amusing that there are still "simple souls" out there that fall for this trap...
????

it's amazing how many people still fall for it. maybe it's tine to explain Thais how this works, cause this scam is 100 years old

Payback day for the civil servants who cashed in bribes when still on duty.
