BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has declared drugs suppression to be an urgent national agenda item.

Deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhanadirek said the prime minister has ordered state employees to mobilize resources to support the government’s war on drugs. The government has also set aside more money for new equipment and technologies to be used in curbing drug trafficking, and is pushing at least three new laws as part of the policy.

She explained that these draft laws, now before parliament, deal with adjustments to punishment for drug offences, regulations on asset seizures in drug cases and additional measures aimed at improving the efficiency of the government’s drug suppression agencies.

Ms. Rachada added that, since October last year, 344 million tablets of methamphetamine, 20.6 tons of crystal methamphetamine, 2.7 tons of heroin and 279,868 tablets of ecstasy were seized in numerous raids. In the first quarter of this year alone, over 4.5 billion baht in assets linked to drugs cases have been confiscated, compared to only 3.4 billion baht seized during the same period last year.

You need at least 3 new laws just for the ministers here ????

Our esteemed PM keeps finding new directions to deflect the attention of his poor handling of the Covid business and the shameful shortage of vaccines, yesterday it was gambling and alcohol, today is about drug suppression, and tomorrow what?  a deceleration to eradicate jaywalking?...

That's so 1980's. Don't they realize that the war on drugs was and is still a failure in most countries? Legalization is the answer, just think of all the tax money they are letting slip through their fingers.

If you don't learn from history, you will be doomed to repeat it. One would think that the disaster that was prohibition would have taught people that making something that people want illegal is the cause of most of the drug crimes being committed worldwide.

Prayut has ordered his minions to come up with anything they can to deflect public attention away from his brothers shenanigans.

Isn't that going to tread on some sensitive toes?

It is typical of this intellectually challenged man to pick something that has failed elsewhere, to focus on. Let's avoid the real problem areas, since we have already failed miserably.

The honorable thing to do would be to focus on your own resignation, asap. OK Cha Cha. Do something useful, for a change. Surprise us. Your incompetence and predictability makes you and incredibly boring and useless man.

Actually that is not quite true. It was the British who have claim to that with the Opium wars, which in those days it was a war over distribution and trading rights whereas  these days it is still distribution but also usage. Make it all legal. Prices will plummet, people will die and covid will be forgotten.

They might as well just make this guy the new PM. He is leaps above everyone being more overly qualified in the art of perpetuated dishonest deception in that elite circle. And he is like a real life POW but in the sense of being convicted in the war against drugs down under. A real role model for everyone elected and aspiring to be a politician.

War on drugs?  Wasn't that current stuff started in the mid 1960's between the Thai police and the Thai military? Like who would get what share and all that?

If we could deply all those involved in the drug trade into a vaccine procurement program, instead of the naive amateurs currently floundering about, we would have the whole population vaccinated in days and money pouring in from outside.

Win win!!!!!

"Prime Minister Declares Illegal Drugs Suppression on the Urgent National Agenda?"

Well, all beware, anytime soon the electorate might declare the prime minister on the urgent national agenda.

And for the illegal drug business I would suggest to hand-pick the most qualified minister with some experience; at least a candidate who can convince people that there is a difference to baking flour in foreign lands.

Eye on the ball, I would suggest getting everyone vaccinated is the highest priority. Drugs and stuff are a side issue.

Having another slice of the action.

Firstly, you'd think the Covid Czar has more pressing issues to deal with right now.

Secondly, I cannot blame any Thai who needs recreational drugs to get through the day ever since the Covid Czar returned happiness to the people.
