BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister has chaired a meeting with private hospitals on the establishment of more wards and hospitels, with representatives of all 21 hospitals in attendance agreeing that more beds for yellow and red patients are needed, along with more negative pressure rooms.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha chaired the ZOOM meeting, using it as an opportunity to express his concern that no amount of hospital beds will be sufficient if the number of infections continues to rise.

The PM acknowledged that vaccines are critical and indicated his administration is hurrying the importation of more, as well as acquisitions by both the public and private sectors, reiterating the government’s main vaccinations remain AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson. He added paperwork is also being processed to acquire Sputnik vaccines from Russia. Alternative vaccines being bought by the private sector include Sinopharm, which is being acquired by Chulabhorn Royal Academy. Moderna vaccines are on schedule to arrive in the fourth quarter and are receiving full support from the state so that they may be distributed nationwide. The same support is being given to the import of Antigen Test Kits.

At the end of the meeting, the PM remarked that all sides must be proactive in adding beds, screening for infection and communicating clearly to avoid confusion.

What about the exorbitant charges that the private hospitals are profiteering from testing, hospitalization and vaccines? Not discussed???

Avoided ? The exorbitance is probably deemed compensation for the downturn in elective surgeries for medical tourists ?

Or maybe unmentioned publicly was the question of more State funding to "convert" more covid bed space ?

Full support for what? a mark up on the already ludicrous price of 350 baht each, a days wages for the poor or not if they are out of work.....feed the family or buy a home covid test kit?

Wasnt it also mandated and published a few months back that private hospitals had to test for Covid and treat free of cost for all Thai nationals.......yet a private hospital in my areas is advertising in Thai tests at 3500 baht each and another private hospital is charging 3900 baht....obviously just a misunderstanding !

If push came to shove I'd rather have Sputnik.  It mixes well with vodka.

If he hadn't been so incompetent he'd have ordered much more vaccines last year instead of recognising the shortfall only now and he would have learned from other countries experience last year and earlier this year and made sure Thailand had enough medical equipment and supplies so that Thai citizens weren't left to die at home and on the streets.

What am I doing personally? Trying to influence as many Thais as I can to vote this Govt out of office at the earliest opportunity.

Thailand had escaped covid, so we all thought, there were no cases.

There wasn't a hope in hell that Thailand was going to escape covid last year and continue as though nothing was going to happen. To do so was delusional, wilfully ignorant, at best plain misinformed. There was the effects the epidemic had on countries the whole world over that should have been learned from and preparations made. Instead Prayut chose to do very little and now the ordinary citizens are victims of the unfolding tragedy.
