Dr Kusak revealed the figures this morning during a live broadcast from Provincial Hall, joined by Phuket Vice Governor Piyapong Choowong and Public Relations Department Phuket office (PR Phuket) Chief Bussaya Chaipeum. The figures were given in response to a deluge of queries as to the high number of cases being confirmed in Phuket in recent weeks, with a record number of local infections confirmed yesterday (Aug 19). fondue zoo Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 There have been a few doctors who have stated the infected numbers are most probably much higher We are testing far behind the leading edge of the viral wave. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 2
smedly Posted August 20, 2021 Posted August 20, 2021 been saying for weeks that covid is rampant in Phuket - sandbox tourists going out and about and mixing with locals - then testing positive because they are the only people tested on the Island and their holiday ruined 2 1

It's a big deal for the few who do get infected, but no worse than they'd be if they tested positive in Spain, Mexico, or anywhere else they could travel where they mingle with locals then have to present a negative test to get on the airplane home. 1

mtls2005 Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 We tested 12,391 people, and 519 people, or 4.2%, tested positive,” Dr Kusak confirmed. Not great news.
MasterBaker Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 Aren't they supposed to shut the project after 90? no?... sorry 2

crazykopite Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 And yet they still continue with the sandbox even tho they had stated it would cease if infections went over a certain number and those figures of infection are now way over that figure 1

Always so many negative comments here about Phuket. Covid-19 is not rampant on Phuket Island. To put the recent rise in cases into perspective, most have occurred in clusters centered around some fresh markets in Phuket Town and the main fishing port at Rassada (also Phuket town). The common factor here being fresh markets and the fishing industry that also employ many migrant workers. Kudos to the authorities for locking down these clusters and testing everyone connected to them, which has undoubtedly kept the rest of the island relatively covid free. They also deserve praise for the vaccination program roll out. I personally know several involved in this and their hard work and dedication under the circumstances has been outstanding. Contrary to what many want to think, life in Phuket remains relatively normal. People (locals, expats and sand boxers) are free to move around the island, spend time relaxing on the wonderful beaches and dine on international and Thai cuisine at a variety of excellent restaurants. Indeed, it was good to be out and about around Rawai last weekend and see and talk with locals, expats and sand boxers. Whilst obviously not back to pre-Covid levels as restaurants/bars must close at 9pm, it was noticeably busier with a far more optimistic and friendly atmosphere. As I drove along Rawai beach front on Saturday morning there was barely a spare parking spot to be had. Bearing in mind that the sandbox was a pilot scheme launched in the tourist low season then it has already provided much needed income for the local economy. Whilst returning to pre-Covid levels seems like a pipe dream, hopefully the sand box has achieved its goal of providing a spring board for the upcoming December to April tourist high season. 2 1

When the sandbox was conceived there were no local infections at all. Now the infections are not from sandboxers, so why should it be cancelled? 1 1

I too would like to see more testing as I believe it would help the government by giving them better information to support their decision making. I fear thou their budget could limit their quantity of future testing.
