Video: Australian pensioner kicked over after he hit Thai man's car that failed to stop at zebra crossing

Dash cam footage from Muang district of Chiang Mai showed the moment an 80 year old Australian man was attacked by an angry Thai motorist.

 

A security guard at the scene said that he saw the foreigner - from Australia - hit the bonnet of a car that failed to stop at a zebra crossing.

 

The car pulled up a little way along from the Rimping Supermarket and the driver ran after the foreigner in a rage and launched a kick into his back.

 

The foreigner was floored and a couple of motorbikes fell over too as two members of the public and the security guard came to his aid.

 

Channel 7 reported that the man who assaulted the foreigner later apologized and paid for all his hospital treatment.

 

The security guard described a leg injury as a result of the attack. 

 

The foreigner did not want to press charges and was later taken home by the Mae Ping police.

He was lucky in way, could have been stabbed or shot. My wife goes ballistic if a I say or doing anything when driving, she is genuinely scared that some idiot will pull a gun.

True to a degree. I regularly cross at Nana, soi 4 and you have to be bold and step out because they will not stop just because the pedestrian crossing is on green.

Could have been German. They don't even look before stepping out. Pedestrians and cyclists are Gods there.

Interesting question, it may be their first time having to deal with this.

I have mentioned this before, because I don't believe that a lot of Thais know the significance of the zebra crossing (as we call it) and that they are supposed to slow down and stop when someone is on it.

 

Add to that the fact that there are many unlicensed/untrained drivers out there and you have a recipe for disaster.

 

Many's the time I have been on a zebra crossing and spied a car coming towards me, so have slowed down, only to find that the car totally ignores me and carries on through.

 

I have had to warn countless visitors here that they should not treat the zebra crossings in Thailand as they treat them in their own country, because drivers here really don't know what to do with them, or give a toss.

This works for most things, in any foreign countries. 

 

How would you react if in , say, Vancouver BC standing right on the kerb on a normal street and a car stopped because they thought you wanted to cross?

I was nearly cleaned up by a tuk tuk on one of these zebra crossings in CM many years ago, since then I make a point of warning any farangs that I see waiting to cross at them not to take it for granted that anyone is going to stop( Thais already know).

People should learn very quickly that like so many things in Thailand, they are just for show and don't have the slightest effect on anything.

Not sure of the point you're trying to put across, however IMO there is a great deal of difference between someone stopping because you are standing on a kerb, and someone driving past you when you are already on a zebra crossing – – something I have had happen to be on a number of occasions!

Same in the Netherlands and most civilized countries. Its to protect the most at risk and those are pedestrians. Seems like you come from a country that is a lot less civilized. Most countries see zebra crossings as sacred.

100% correct.

 

It comes down to a lack of education.

 

They are simply not aware of things like stopping for pedestrians on zebra crossings, right of way (intersections, roundabouts etc.) and other basic principles of operating a motor vehicle safely and courteously. 

 

Then the incorrect and dangerous behaviour is tolerated because there is no enforcement of the rules.

If a pedestrian is on a crossing it is illegal for a motor vehicle to cross.

A zebra crossing in Thailand is just the killing zone. The police don't like to work too hard finding the bodies of pedestrians.
