China says criticisms of vaccine hurt its goodwill

The continuing questioning of the efficacy of the Chinese-made Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine has drawn the ire of China whose Embassy in Bangkok said it hurts China’s goodwill to help Thailand’s fight against the pandemic, triggering a heated debate on the social media.

 

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China over the weekend issued a statement on its Facebook to refute persistent claims by critics of the Prayut government that the Chinese vaccine is not effective against the virus.   Similar claims were repeated by many of the opposition MPs during the no-confidence debate in the House of Representatives against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul last week.

 

It said the vaccine has been approved by the World Health Organization for emergency use and approved by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration.  It also pointed out that studies by public health agencies in Chile and Indonesia showed that Sinovac was 86 per cent and 95 per cent effective respectively in dealing with mutated variants of the virus, “which proves it’s not low-quality vaccine as alleged.”

It's true that the vaccine peformed very well against the earlier variants. But so far no large scale real world studies have been completed on how well it performs against the delta variant. And the fact is that China has never released all the final data on its Phase 3 trial and waited until May 27, 2021 to release even preliminary data. As long as China won't commit to transparency - and that seems unlikely give the nature of the regime - it's going to continue to encounter this kind of problem.

And it certainly isn't helping its case by the implied threat behind the statement that criticisms of the vaccines are hurting its goodwill.

China's "goodwill" sounds like the vaccines are gifts. Rather the opposite. Thailand paid significantly higher prices per dose for the vaccines than other countries.

Doesn't that observation apply to every country? And keep in mind that in the case of Sinovac its vaccine was produced by a company that's located in China but it's not the Chinese govt.

Make a better quality vaccine and you don't get criticism . Show your data just like US and European countries did. What is wrong with stating that a vaccine is less effective then other ones. Why should the truth be hidden.

 

China needs to grow up and learn that unlike in their own country they can't silence people outside their country.

I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to prove here but first if you think the Chinese government does not have their hands involved in many if not the majority of large Chinese corporations - especially the one that produces the vaccine - then you are either very naive or a Chinese Communist government apologist.

Obviously they're going to play a role since they have to approve the vaccine. And no doubt the Chinese govt is increasingl interfering with the way private enterprises are run in China. But that doesn't mean that this company is an agent of China. And now that you've outed me, Comrade Xi is probably not going to give me my Xmas bonus. Thanks a bunch.

The lack of food safety regulations dictate otherwise on what the "Chinese govt unleashed", period! Where did you think defecating in the streets and eating things not made for human consumption was going to get them?

Well their lack of sanitary practices may have led to the rise of the virus but that is hardly is proof of intention. and the Chinese people have a long history of eating all kinds of things that you or I wouldn't eat.  Don't know that means that they weren't made for human consumption. Of course, if you're an observant jew or muslim, you might think differently.

Whatever the faults of the Chinese govt, and they are legion, I think you'll find that it's not at all unusual for a nation only ever to act in a way that furthers its own interests. Some have a more enlightened take on what their own interests are than others.

If they co-operate fully with the WHO they would have a chance to plead their case. However they have blocked phase 2 of the investigation.
