Personally I would be pleased with a smaller, but much more expensive tourist industry. Of course that would require cleaning the place up, sorting out the dangerous electricity, and impounding the vehicle of lots of bad drivers.

Why would anyone want to come to your expensive, sanitised tourist destination? Cities like Singapore and Tokyo have higher safety standards, cleaner streets and better drivers than Thailand could ever have.

Why don't you live in one of those safe, expensive cities? Not enough money, right? ????

Most western tourists will only come if there is nightlife to enjoy.

No bars, nightclubs and other later night activities open, the Thais can kiss it goodbye.

As the most miserable man in Thailand says, no alcohol, no parties.

Stay at home like me and knit one, pearl one.

Seen a lot of chinese ( even chinese women ) , walking in red light quarters and doing ' window shopping ' ... before .

Correct, China isn't even issuing passports to its own citizens anymore.

GREAT finally China is doing something that benefits the rest of the world.

The article lost me at "chinese".  The chinese are not coming.  Not for a long long long time.

It's the time to change the fortune-tellers if those who are turning Thailand into an Islamic country, where even smelling beer can lead to fines and jail, don't understand that all the alcohol bans will further stave off tourism

Btw , just seen a report about Amsterdam and it's red light quarter ... it is so packed with tourists that the locals want to move away ... What attracts all these tourists ?

The excitement and entertainment they get over there ...

It is not really the ' happy holiday for a family on a beach ' prospectus that attracts people , it is excitement and entertainment as well .

Let's face it : a mayor attraction of Thailand was it's sex workers ... even a family of ' normal ' tourists want to have a look at this at least , to have something to show and tell when back home .

If Thailand is killing this business , it shoots itself in the foot .

Spend a day on the beach or sightseeing , in the evening , go out for a good dinner in a restaurant , send the kids back to the hotel , and then go for a drink to a  'red light ' quarter , that is what many want .

Make Patts the new thai Las Vegas , would , f.e. be a huge money maker ...

and open controlled casinos and betting shops / online betting .

His ministry wants to attract travellers from China the most, and may seek travel bubbles with Asean nations if they are low-risk countries and travellers have been fully vaccinated.

Please, enough with the bubble fantasies - they've been yakking about bubbles for over a year now, and exactly zero of them have come to fruition.

I'm not sure why it needs to take years. Tourism in Europe was positively booming this summer, almost back to pre-Covid levels in many popular places.

Thailand could be the same, if they rescind ALL of their insane Covid entry requirements. THAT would be "bold", not what they've planned so far!

Why would Thai tourism particularly want Chinese tourists, they really don't know who the tourists are that spend real money while in Thailand do they!!!

No Sex workers in Thailand c'mon now not in this oh so pious country .

Their whole visa requirements would frighten any Farang from wanting to apply for retirement visa.

I had one for 6 years 90 days is me in the future.

So looking at a prostitute sitting in a window is exciting is it ?

Give me the windmills any day, what few there are, at least they move.

Thailand has always attracted the low end of the market. That includes the buffet-guzzling Chinese, as the better mannered ones go elsewhere. I've seen them. These days, the government has visions of grandeur and believes it can attract the rich. The country never has and never will, so they are chasing the wrong market.

What they need to do is concentrate on and encourage those who came before, and if those are sex tourists then so be it. Instead of sticking heads in the sand, give people what they want and the tourists will come. The government has to accept that other places have better beaches, better infrastructure, even better prices for the western goods that western visitors feel comfortable with. And what was a struggling business even before the pandemic due to greedy pricing and poor attitude, the sex industry, also needs to get its house in order.

In the past, poor service didn't matter as there was always another plane of victims landing, but in these days of social media there are no secrets anymore. Everyone is pre-warned about poor service and attitude and they are able to easily look elsewhere instead of being caught unawares once they've landed.

Nice post. But when you read the whole story, it is sick how many still castigated China for 'overpopulation' even after being told it had nothing to do with China. That, unfortunately, is what we in the rational world are dealing with.

The Thai don't know how to earn from tourism ???

The Ladyboy Cabaret in Pattaya Alcazar/Tiffany and Phuket Simon are doing it for free just for Chinese tourists  ???   ( Over 90% audience are Asians )

Every tourist spends money,  one way or the other.

China claim to have had 4,636 covid deaths in total, and 96,435 cases of covid since 2019. With a similar population, India have 451,220 deaths and 34,000,500 cases.

You can probably add several zeros to the tail end of any numbers published by the CCP.

The longer they wait, the more Thailand WILL be forgotten.

Plus, as usual the lack of vision, wisdom, skill and talent, prevents them from realizing that their primary market of low to middle income Chinese, Malaysians, and Indians have been financially decimated by Covid. Plus, changes in attitudes regarding long haul travel, alternative travel spots and more.

Expect 300,000 tourists in the 12 months following The TOTAL end of restrictions. 2 million the following year, and no more than 5 million tourists a year for several years after that. This is realistic. International tourism here will never be the same, post Covid.

And how on earth is Thailand justifying the billions being spent of the hapless army, when they cannot even accomplish something as simple as keeping the nation safe from ravages across the borders?

'No Ordinary Passports to be Issued': China Restricts Overseas Travel to Curb Fresh Covid Outbreak

China ?? China ??  >>> Are they supposed to be the majority shareholders of Thailand ?? Wait a minute - Yes, that's it. Seriously - China isn't issuing passports to it citizens, and the reason given is that they fear resurgence of the virus when people return. Real reason is: a mass exodus of fleeing citizens.

"More than a year after the deadly COVID outbreak, the world is still waiting for consumers to fully return to their old spending habits. But a new study indicates that the pandemic may have changed some of us forever.
"That prediction comes from a working paper by the European Central Bank, which gathered information from 7,750 households in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands. The data, collected after initial restrictions were first lifted in in July 2020, looked at spending across tourism, hospitality, services, retail and public transport."

If those figures are close to being accurate, China's borders are likely to stay sealed for a long time to come.

But surely Thailand can get 'take aways' by calling and ordering "One million tourists to go please"
