PHUKET: As Phuket prepares to welcome tourists with the full reopening of the country on Monday (Nov 1), authorities on the island have issued a reminder to transport providers, specifically taxi drivers, to adopt a more professional approach.

 

At a meeting at Phuket City Hall yesterday (Oct 28), Anupap Rodkwan Yodrabam, Permanent Secretary of Phuket, together with Pol. Col. Aknit Phithaksart, Toll Plaza Deputy Commander of Phuket Provincial Police and the Phuket Provincial Attorney outlined details to ensure the best standards were set and adhered to by taxi drivers to ensure tourists were welcomed warmly and felt safe during their stay.

 

This specifically covered the setting of fair and transparent rates charged for passenger journeys as determined by provincial standards, clear vehicle markings and ensuring all drivers adhered to dress regulations of a smart and presentable uniform.

Talk about beating a dead horse. Rip offs will be worse than usual because tourists are not coming in droves as the government has hyped with multiple daily announcements.

 

 

Thai translations to 'Up your game" find clever and witty ways to stick it up the unsuspecting tourists but with a smile...

I've only transited through. Slept near bus station once, plane to BKK once. 30 years in E Asia.

 

This place is legion for scams and tight immigration.

 

No idea why people visit and live here. It's almost a tacit acceptance to be abused and ripped off.

I Though their game was not to use the meter, and or to take people for a long ride and overcharge them. 

I hope they don't just read the title.

 

Taxi drivers have no real reason to ‘up their game’ when everyone else in Thailand is looking to rip off/cheat/gouge visitors to the maximum extent possible.

 

 

 

Really?How many tourists they think will be coming?

Dust of and check the oil on 10% of the taxis will be more then enough.

Oh,and please check the brakes and tires.

On the other hand,just get a few of your buddies to give you a push start

and you will be good to go.

 

I'm starting to get scared of this Nov. 1st opening date.   

 

Too much hopes are being given despite very little odds of success. 

 

I think not many tourists will come to Thailand at least not until the next high season.

 

Do many Thai people actually believe something will change on Nov. 1st 2021?

I am dead serious/curious: Are there any other countries that have to warn their taxi drivers to behave?

With what is happening in Russia I would expect some here. 

 

In the post there was no mention of not using their phones while driving. Most are constantly on it.

I was speaking of the island of Phuket not Thailand. Guess you missed that.

 

Phuket is a sort of no option scamatorium. Usually wily expats can have ways to avoid the traps, perils and pitfalls. But Phuket ... everyone is in on the game. It's like a scammers union.

 

There are places all over the world very similar. I'm thinking Europe in particular.

 

But I have no use for that island. If covid did not humble this lot nothing will.

Taxi driver are generally a bit of chancers anyway.

Maybe they could serve alcohol in taxis, since it won't be available in other venues...

I think you'll find that "the country " means more than Phuket.

Taxis and tuk tuks in Phuket have been the biggest factor that ruined my trips there. Always felt ripped off, with bad attitude on top. I believe many people also feel the same way and do not wish to come back, especially expats living in other parts of Thailand.

 

I don't hold my breath for any changes though, 1 month effort maybe then back to normal.

Locals have learnt not to get ripped off. It's the tourists that this happens to.

Headline and especially the message should be...

"THAILAND URGED TO UP IT'S GAME"

 

A quick wash and you are ready to go.

We need at least 54,000 taxis for the millions expected to rush through immigration on 01st Nov.

Neither reminders nor orders have worked in the past!  So, how on earth is it going to work now!

What chance of them improving? I just saw a pig fly by my window.

Does this mean that Koh Samui taxis will actually have to have a meter, rather than a sign that says Taxi Meter?

 

This could also mean Tuk Tuks will not be allowed to take you to Jewelry and gold shops.

 

Prepare for a run on batteries, I will bet some have died, they will need to get the Tuk Tuks polished up and motors running asap.
