Eight COVID-19 Omicron variant cases have been detected in Thailand to date, with three more awaiting confirmatory tests, according to the Medical Sciences Department.

The 11 cases include five Thais, all of them having arrived from African countries, including Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. The remainder are foreigners.

Meanwhile, Clinical Professor Emeritus Dr Udom Kachinthorn, advisor to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), warned today (Monday) that more cases are expected and the variant may become the dominant variant in Thailand if the population lowers its guard.

Omicron is expected to become the dominant covid strain in London by tomorrow.

Doubling every 2.5 days.

It will rip through every country on the globe.

Not if but when.

Let's hope Thailand doesn't do it's usual head in the sand routine.

It's s bit hard to know how many positive cases Thailand actually has when they continue to keep testing so few people.

If Thailand should test the same % as Denmark, Thailand should test approx 2 million Thais using PCR tests each day.

It's not a lot that Thailand test.

I don't think anyone do not want a milder version to dominate, but it can spread to fast.

No age given of the dead person. No stating of previous health issues, no stating if the person caught it on their death bed suffering from final stage cancer, an electric scooter rider run over by a bus, a 400kg man with heart disease, an 80 a day smoker with lung disease, a 102 year old pensioner.....................

Total political scare mongering of the public by ALL the politicians.

Want to give the facts, fine we are all ears, but give is all the facts, not the ones you think will just scare people.

I've had three jabs, i support the vaccines roll outs, but heavens stop the nonsense scare mongering

Correction, if border controls lower their guard.

Because a small percentage of those infected will need to be hospitalized/die and because of the speed of transmissibility, it will all happen in a short space of time, thereby overwhelming hospitals. A small percentage of a large number is still a big absolute number.

is there hysteria? I see a sense of inevitability and “here we go again” mindset, hysteria, not so much

I do not see how reporting a death is scare mongering. Not reporting it would be dishonest, reporting more deaths would be scare mongering. Perhaps a few days is required in respect for the family before his personal details and health are spread far and wide.

Covid has quickly become a tool to control the population through fear, and/or a means of diverting attention away from other failures of government. Thailand is a great example of the former and the UK a great example of the latter.

Unfortunately most people have rolled over to have their tummy tickled. I won't be betting on this new ultra authoritarian style of governance leaving when Covid subsides, the politicians have come to love the power too much. Expect exaggerated new strains and convenient spikes in numbers whenever new legislation or restrictions are deemed desirable.

They need to give details, not just scare people. Just saying someone died "with" Omicron sounds suspiciously like an 85 year old with terminal cancer got hit by a truck and later tested positive at the morgue.

If that's not the case, let's hear the details. Were they a fit 20 something sportsman that was genuinely killed by the virus? Without the details, I have my doubts. People just want transparency so they can make informed decisions about the risk themselves and act accordingly. Not be spun a half baked story that is used to lock them in their homes.

Really? Governments were using Covid as a tool to control the population in December 2019? You hadn't even heard of it then, let alone had your day to day life affected by it.

Maybe time works differently in your world?

No, what you said sounds suspicious.....

The transparency is a person who tested poisitive for omicron covid has since died. Also The U.K. Health Security Agency said Monday that there were 10 patients in hospitals across England, ages 18 to 85, diagnosed with the omicron variant on or before admission,

If Omicron is mild , does not cause serious disease and is bound to replace the more dangerous Delta strain , it might be good news as people infected bu Omicron will develop antibodies that protect them , at least for a while ...

High infection rate , mild processes ... that will lead to the famous ' herd immunity ' and could mean the end of the virus ... if the Omicron virus does not further mutate , ( and there is a chance for this given the high transmission rate  ) , into a more dangerous version ...

Let's hope for the best ...

Stop nitpicking.....so it is 3 months short of 2 years...whoopee, great catch.

Anyways,

omicron is going to be sweeping entire countries shortly.  They are just trying to slow it down a bit.

We have no control over this one - it is too transmissible.  Good news is so far hardly any symptoms.  Let's hope that this holds true.

Likely, if the individual was under....say 50, it would have been in the headlines

So let them provide the full details. Because if only one person has died and they were old with pre-existing conditions then they shouldn't be using that to remove people's freedoms.

You might like authoritarian governments that use scare stories to deny liberty and freedom, but don't assume everyone does.

First death of someone reported to have had omicron in the UK and predicting 48% infection levels by year end. Given that as an example of a country with similar population levels as Thailand I expect that those high levels of infection will be in Thailand in the next few months, assuming of course that they report it accurately.   Now given that and what the Thai regime has done in the past I anticipate that this will lead to yet another curtailment of civil liberties and business closures in Thailand next year. 2022 Songkran I suspect will be in danger of cancellation.

Now if only they can string this out to election year 2023, well I'll leave that open to opinion.

The virus doesn’t care about your opinion.

So why not just provide the details and we can all stop guessing? If the details provided proof of how deadly Omicron was don't you think they would have released that? It certainly fits their narrative of how we all need to get the booster and hide behind the sofa for a few more months.

The paucity of detail tells me everything I need to know.

You don’t like the restrictions the government imposes to suppress outbreaks of Covid.

Patience, it will form part of Uk Health's statistics that are grouped into appropriate categories on age etc.

WHO announced more than a week ago there had been no official reported deaths despite the daily deaths in South Africa that are still ongoing, now UK Health security has announced the first "official" death in the UK from Omi.

No scare mongering going on here.

Because the announcement stated that the patient “died with” Omicron, it’s possible that the medical examiner may conclude that Omicron was not the primary cause of death.
