Naew Na reported that the Thonburi Criminal Court in western Bangkok granted bail in the sum of 200,000 baht to a police hospital surgeon.

Dr Phanurak Rattanaphaisan faces drunk driving, negligent driving causing death, speeding and charges related to driving a red plate vehicle while prohibited on August 29th last year.

Dr Phanurak - who has the rank of police lieutenant - was behind the wheel of a brand new Porsche that went into the back of a Honda Civic on the Ratchaphreuk Road.

A male passenger in the car died and the female driver was seriously injured.

It is claimed that the doctor was over the alcohol limit and over the 80 kmph speed limit when the accident occurred.

The court will next meet on April 25th.

I suspect that the court meeting again on April 1st would be more appropriate.

Let's see how the justice will be meted here when the accused is a police lieutenant and a surgeon...

All a misunderstanding insofor as no doubt they will determine that the Honda Civic was actually reversing at high speed.

Defence could claim that he has saved and will save more lives than he has taken.

So maybe a Wai and a fine is all that is required. Hiso scales of justice in the balance. Not

Can't use that "coming back from the dentist appointment" excuse anymore?

Nor the "brake failure" excuse as these new cars all have full digital history.

Dr. Dismember (aka Chop Doc - Wisut Boonkasemsanti) did but 10 years, this chap will not see the inside of a prison.

He can practice medicine on prisoners who need it.

But I agree...   It has been normalised for people in positions of power or those with the right connections to get away with these issues.

Another issue enabling this sort of behaviour is those with connections are simply allowed to pass through the few police alcohol checkpoints that are around rendering them nothing more than a mild inconvenience for the wealthy and connected.

Hopefully Thailand has matured sufficiently to be able to handle these these issues without succumbing to bribes - unfortunately, I very much doubt it.

August last year... so why isn't he behind bars already for manslaughter?

Rhetorical....

Illicit business is good for the strongmen that use their position, connections and influence to make money on the side.

Already 30+years that I am frequenting this amazing country. And still every time a new surprise comes up. How can a policeman be a surgeon and vice versa? The Porsche story I understood from my first visit when I had to hand over the brown envelop to an officer.

Makes me wonder how he's prepared when he's at work.

By being a surgeon.  Perhaps via financing.  There's a few options.

"A Porsche driven by a police doctor. How the <deleted> can police afford to own these vehicles"

By being paid a surgeons salary, not a police officer's!   The bloke on the bike bought it used for B113,000, easily sorted on finance.

Being a Police Hospital surgeon isn't an illicit business, neither is it "making money on the side".

He's a surgeon at The Police Hospital, given a rank.

Thanks, appreciate it.  I find that accurate comments are always far better than false claims.
