Where to go for Songkran?

Featured Replies

I can’t stand the week of water splashing in Pattaya, so I want to leave town. But where to go?

How hard will it be to get a ticket and hotel in Phuket? Or will Phuket be unpleasant during Songkran?

Where’s a good place to go?

I am hoping Bangkok......it should be empty as the Isan mob all pile out and there won't be enough idiot tourists about to get it off the ground

Go to Isaan for Songkran? Do you think many other people will also be going to Isaan for Songkran?

I lived nearly ten years in Roi-Et and during Songhkran everybody is out of control. My experience, it is the same in the rest of Isaan.

Thought they announced no water this year again?

Apparently Bangkok is quieter as the water people go elsewhere

Luang Prubang.

Now with less folklore:

Step 1: Supermarket to stock up for 2 weeks

Step 2: Bunker in your home after barricading the door and putting black plastic on all exterior windows

Step 3: Make sure your Internet/Netflix bill is current

The Deep South. Muslims do not celebrate Songkran and will be fasting too, so they won't bother you.

Yea ... Isan is the last place you want to go to avoid water.

Phuket Kata & Karon, (not Patong) was surprisingly dead, when there during Songkran, about 12 yrs ago.  Or Krung Thep, staying away from touristy nightlife spots, as the only places that ever celebrated anyway.

And yes, reading water is out again this, so no worries.  Thankfully.

Planned to stay few days in hotels around Sukhumvit area during coming Songkran.

Would it be difficult to find food or drinks during that time as most local going back hometown celebrating Songkran? ????

My last experience during 2019 Songkran was not a problem...

North west coast of Koh Phangan.

Ao Mae Haad.

A couple of very nice hotels (Maehaad Bay resort is my favourite).

Nothing to do there except swim, watch the sunsets, eat and drink. Very few locals.

Rent a scooter and travel down the west coast for more very good restaurants.

North coast villages are also good but not many.

Stay away from the SE coast- Full Moon Party territory.

I go there with friends every February for a relaxing break.

It has been very quiet there for the last two years - very few tourists.

No problems buying alcohol,

but with PCR tests and need Thailand Pass to come home?

It is lovely there but I would wait until all of the rules are scrapped.

Did Pattaya ok water this songkran everywhere?

or just on certain streets?

or not at all?

I haven't seen anything specific

Why don't you ask your Mum - seems you like you need comforting.... ????

Any of the very pleasant riverside resorts in Kanchanaburi province.

Luang Prubang was the best folkloric-wise, but too much of a crush of people.

I've had over 10 years living on the Darkside of Pattaya, never had a problem with Songkran, I just don't go to places that are known Songkran hotspots, so your fault really, it's a Thai tradition for Thais & tourists, some tourists only ever come at Songkran, so plan your day and stay away from where the water is. It's like Christmas, it's a western Tradition adopted by Thais, and some westerners have adopted Songkran,  but I know how to avoid it.

Samed is a nightmare on the way to / from the pier on Songkran.

I've had people try to get into our car with flour/water. Slapped it all over the car including windscreen so you can't see. If returning to BKK head the other way out of town to get on the main road.

I've spent many, many Songkrans there - just go outside the "idiot hours" - early in the morning(first speedboats @ 8-830), hard to avoid on the way back unless you return very early.

Samed Villa is always a good choice , easy to walk where you wish.

Not so many will survive the return trip though.
