Thailand, highlighting “inclusivity”, abstained from a vote to suspend Russia from UN Human Rights Council over its aggression against Ukraine during the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

Thailand was among 58 nations, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, which abstained from the vote. 93 countries, such as Canada, Australia, Belgium, France, and the United States, voted in favour, while 24 countries, including China, Iran, Lao PDR and Vietnam, voted against the move.

According to the explanation offered by Thailand’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, the country voted to abstain due to the overriding importance it attaches to a “transparent, impartial and inclusive approach in the multilateral regime”.

But there was many others also and even 24 country think was good thing to keep Russia in there!

Russia and China would have punished Thailand had it voted "yes." The US will not do anything except put out some weak statement about how happy it is that at least Thailand didn't spit in its face again.

The US should tell India it will no longer support India's attempt to become a permanent member of the Security Council. But it won't. It will just reserve some more H1B visas for Indians to take American jobs.

They should also tell to Saudi Arabia that they can make they own weapons from now on!

They don't want to offend any country that may be in a position to retaliate against them.

Sounds like a quote from "Yes Minister".  A lot of waffle words that mean absolute tripe.

Utterly weak response. However, they are known for that all over the world. Shameful!

I don't see any reason to include India into permanent member of the SC. Just because a country has a billion plus population and the West wants to access its thriving and growing middle class market, does not mean India should be included in to SC.

BTW, hasn't USA withdrawn few years ago from the UN HRC?

In December 2020, US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft said that the UN Human Rights Council was "a haven for despots and dictators, hostile to Israel, and ineffectual on true human rights crises."[181]

A statement made by a Trump appointee, replaced in early 2021.

"Today, I can announce that the United States was elected to serve on the UN Human Rights Council for the next term, beginning in 2022."

Well it is a comparatively impoverished state, struggling to maintain the wealth and status of the ruling elite.

No place for principles here.

It's all Kabuki Theater with no upside for Thailand to vote, either way.

They did the smart thing.

I wonder if Thailand would have abstain if Russia were dropping bombs on their citizens.  Thailand go dig up some dirt and tunnels in the Red Forest.

Qatar abstained.

So nobody watches World Cup (in Qatar or on tv) ??

The junta Is Thailand.

Junta Chief is PM.

Cabinet of Ministers nominated by the PM and endorsed by the Head of State

Senate appointed by the junta.

House controlled by a junta/pro-military coalition of MP's.

So it follows that human rights in Thailand is an endangered species.
