Immigration told to clean up their act: Employ a "service mind" - no playing on phones and no bribes

They opened a brand new dedicated  immigration building in our area.  It has CCTV cameras in the front area to protect against bribes.  And in the back room where you pay—they accept credit cards—and have an obvious tip jar.  This seems to work.

Yes it is Pattaya immigration, and the queue can be out the door & through the carpark down to the road when immigration has been closed due to a holiday or two, considering that Pattaya probably has the highest concentration of expats than anywhere else in Thailand it could really do with a larger office & probably a separate building for the 90 day reporting.

In actual fact none of this applies to most tourists who only see immigration at the airport on arrival and departure for their holiday.

 

BUT, for the rest of us who sadly do have to visit immigration offices, he needs to emphasise staff being friendly, helpful, and POLITE, especially in respecting those retired here. Most senior staff in my local office talk to you like dirt! All credit to a different  immigration office; Udon Thani, where I last went to obtain a re-entry permit, and just 10 mins before their closing time. I was greeted with a smile, received a 'Thank you' and even a wai on conclusion! Respect!

He's taken action the Thai way, by doing absolutely nothing. As I've written before, the way it works is he has spoken, made his recommendations, and his job is done. Anything that happens later is not his responsibility. You, I, he and everyone else knows that what is said will be ignored and will not be enforced, but that is not the point. He has acted, done what he considers to be his job, while actually doing nothing. This happens all the time, at least once a week. Someone makes a declaration and the next day it's ignored and forgotten. But that person has done their job by 'acting'.

This morning the immigration office of koh Samui refused me the annual extension of the "O Thai wife" visa, despite a restaurant, a salary for which I pay taxes, 
 the certificate of my annual Italian income (3 times the 400k)  translated by my Embassy.
They told me  have to see 400k or 40k a month every month; this is absurd, useless to explain I got around 1 million from Italy in 12 months.

In the end she told me to put the 400k in the bank and go back to apply for the visa or go to apply abroad in one  Thai Embassy

Ah, I am so lucky to use the Kalasin office. Rarely more than half a dozen there, usually Lao, and a separate office for the 90 day report.

"EMPLOY A SERVICE MIND" = We all know how much fun it is to jerk around a farang but try not to make it so obvious.

"NO PLAYING ON PHONES" = Go into the back room to play Facebook.

"NO BRIBES" = Don't let others see you soliciting bribes but I need to see a 50% increase immediately.

"PROJECT A GOOD IMAGE" = I know it's difficult but smile & be nice, no matter how much it hurts.

"PROVIDE A SWIFT SERVICE" = Make a few extra baht directing them to an agent.

Yep , pay up or pack up ... it is how it is and forevermore shall it be so , endemic throughout and we have to accept it if we wish to remain. Factored into my cost of living here as I knew it would be a requirement. From top down too.

It's a bit like Thais lifting up their masks to cover their mouths and noses when a farang comes towards them, they not only think we are brain dead, they also think we are odds on to have covid, unlike themselves.

Having said that my last extension at Chiang Mai immigration

went very well , just over half an hour, never have I been asked

for or paid a bribe to any Immigration official.

When I got my first retirement extension I had to pay a bribe that was in 2017 haven't had to pay one since

Another year in the LOS. 15 mins at the labor office, then 15 minutes at immigration. Thanks Issan.

 

As opposed to a certain office neighboring BKK, which takes several visits each lasting several hours. The best thing to happen to that office, IMHO, would be to sink into the ocean and provide that area with lovely seaside recreation.

Prachinburi IO is set up the same way I have my 90-day report on my computer I print it out sign it and unless I get behind someone with a stack of passports I can usually be in and out in less than 10 minutes

The biggest problems are the office is too small and in the wrong location, it should be in Central Pattaya, there is a huge empty top floor in the Avenue Shopping Centre which would be ideal.

I think dealing with the public no matter where isn’t the best of vocations, I have found here also Bank Staff never appear to be happy very rarely smile or acknowledge you. I think both jobs Immigration and the Banking sector is stressful because of the amount of paperwork which they have to sort through.

At least your local immigration office had the audacity to refer you to an agent. At my local immigration office the IO had the audacity to tell me not to use an agent and use them instead as a money fixer cutting the agent out of the picture.

 

They told me they call it "Special Service" and asked me to make them an offer when I asked how much are their fees.
