Chang Beer Now 4.8%

Recommended Posts

After almost 2 years, I returned, and found my favourite seafood-accompanying Thai beer - Chang is now lowered to 4.8% abv from 5%. I remember it was more than 6% long ago.

It was already tasting watered down even at 5%, but now it's even lower.

So having Sing Beer nowadays.

Any thoughts on why it was lowered?

Why did they stop Chang Export...far better than Chang IMO...better than the lot of the domestic beers...crazy.

Because they began to regulate normal Chang beers and so Chang Export wasn't needed .

Previously the alcohol content of Chang beer was unregulated and the alcohol content varied and so they couldn't export the beer .

They then invented Chang export which had a precise alcohol content and could be exported

Why?  Very simple....it's Taxed on amount of alcohol, less alcohol less tax per bottle, price per bottle is less.  Nothing more.

That is the case in other countries but not so in Thailand - or it didn't used to be.

Since I only drink MY beer at 4.5% - and still add some ice or lime  - I'm ok with a drop in alcohol levels. UK beer normally is only 4%. Anything over 4-4.5% to me takes like it has the consistency of syrup !

I hope poster is not the wasted guy I saw sitting outside the 7/11 the other day with a 'special brew' strength tin in his hand.

Get your facts straight. Tapper beer is 6.5%

Only 51 baht a large can if you buy from Tops, Foodland etc.

The best Thai beer for taste and value in Thailand IMO.

I wonder how long they will be able to maintain the current price?

Less alcohol duty to pay, increasing profit for the brewers??????

Yes indeed, when I retired to live in Thailand 22 years ago bottled Beer Chang was 6.4% but sometimes exceeded this (as I well remember!!) Quote from Goggle:

"The original version of Chang is an amber coloured lager beer made from malt, rice, hops, water and yeast. The combination of rice used in the brewing process and the stronger than average 6.4% alcohol content by volume can catch out unwitting tourists"
