So says my bargirlfriend, who recruits ladies for bars and gogos. 
 

Typically, bargirls are now operating under 10 day contracts. But, it’s unusual for a lady to work the 10 days. The reason is, when their bar shuts down, the ladies head for the boy bars that don’t close until 6 am. Which means the ladies are still hungover when their bar opens. So they barfine themselves and stay in the room. The only deterrent is that they have to pay cash to barfine themselves. If they work for an agency, their barfine is deducted at the end of their 10 day contract, so they never see the expense, it’s not tangible to them.

 

Or, they have a new boyfriend and want to play rather than work. However, that’s only when the boyfriend is new. Once he has his hooks in her, he will drive the lady to work, borrow some cash from her, and go play while she works.

 

If you buy a drink for a lady in a bar, she will tell you the story about her husband running off when she has a kid or two, requiring her to work bar to send money home. The reality is that the ladies send very little home, but blow most of their earnings on boys, clothes, tattoos, etc. Note when I write “boys” that includes tomboys.

 

As July 1 rolls around, new bars and gogos are opening, so there is tremendous demand for ladies and salaries are rising. A lady could earn 30,000+ baht in a month, not counting drink commissions or earnings from customers. This is the best time to be a boyfriend for a bargirl, especially a gogo “model”.

I have not been in the bar scene for many years. By the time one adds up the cost of preliminary lady drinks, bar fines and the P4P itself, it becomes quite expensive. Better value elsewhere.

Sure, but drinking in the bar is integral.  If you just need to pay for sex, that's easy to do elsewhere.

I'm sure the glamour of the job and prospects of early entitled retirement wears off fast.

 

After a few months with sexpats/sextourist, I'm not surprised if they've had their fill already of that lot.  

 

I used to bartend, and drunks are simply annoying.  Imagine being a woman and being mauled all night by a bunch of old, over weight, smelly CCs.  Then knowing you'll be back tomorrow.

it's been this way for a long time hasn't it? been hearing about this stuff since the early noughties.

Personally I think gogo bars are the best place to see what you get. How do they move? Are they interested to make customers happy or do they look more in the mirror and at their phone? And how is their mood today and now?

Don't know where old mate got his figures but top shelf are making a stack more than 30k a month. That's peanuts. Heaps of  girls out there making that just in ladies drinks and that's before the barfining an everything else that comes with it. Not to mention the muppets will be back soon all the major sponsors and minor sponsors sending hookers money from foreign lands so they can book a spot on their return. Then you got your 2 week millionaires paying weeelllll over the odds I could go on and on but I think I've made my point.

There is one little detail which you don't mention: What's the alternative?

For many girls the alternative is to get f@$#54 by their Thai bf who is possibly drunk and just comes from another girl.

If the girls have the alternative of a drunk Thai guy who wants money or drunk farangs who pay money then the decision is not so difficult.

And yes, I know there are also nice Thai guys who take care of their girls - at least in theory they should exist.

Having lived in a small farming community for close to 20 years, this has most definitely been my observation. Practically zero trickle-down moolah being splashed around. Only remittances I've ever seen being sent home are for child care for the bar girl's own children, and usually it's just the bare minimum, i.e., 3-5K/mo.

 

I am sure some of the top lookers might pull in well over 30K a month, but I am inclined to believe that the 20-30K figure is true for many girls, especially with tourism struggling.

 

If that's true, that goes a long way towards explaining why there has been a precipitous drop in the quality of women attracted to the industry. 12K working a nine to five job compared to 20K to put up with all the stresses of sex work starts looking pretty good.
