No-one (or not many) was complaining about the original freedom of movement as the 12 countries involved were similar economically and the inward immigration remained in the tens of thousands per year.   People would freely move both ways and this was good for everyone.  

 

What I quite clearly stated was that Blair not only signed the treaty for the accession countries in the EU expansion, but ensured that the UK would be permanently changed by allowing freedom of movement from the poorer accession countries into the UK.   Every other EU country imposed a delay on freedom of movement for these countries.   Because the UK was the only rich country that did not restrict freedom of movement from those from the poorer accession countries the freedom of movement that was previously working so well became a one way migration for hundreds of thousands of people into the UK.    If Blair had simply applied the same delay as every other country instead of his cynical ploy to "rub the rights nose in diversity" as he was reported to have said, the UK would still be in the EU today.    So yes, I blame Blair for this.

The Tories will of course always vote Tory. The secret is to persuade the “floating voter" or even people who normally support the other parties to vote Tory.

 

Boris Johnson can do that — he did it in two London Mayoral Elections, and in the last General Election, Margaret Thatcher did it, Tony Blair did it for Labour. That is why they all won big majorities.

 

Boris Johnson's big problem is that he is not “one of us". Not one of the “men in grey suits" who, because they weigh rather than count the vote in their constituencies, are relatively immune to the vissitudes of elections. They remain safely in parliament whether in opposition or government. I don't think, quite frankly, many of them are that interested in being in government.

 

Boris is a bit weird, a risk taker, a man who relies on being a character ( most Tory MPs would not recognise a character if it fell off their bookshelves in a leather bound volume and hit them on the bonce!); a politician who works on connecting with people other than the Tory faithful. They don't like that. He is an election winner, I'm not too sure that they are too bothered about that!

 

The same holds true for the mainstream media. He is “not one of us". You would have thought they would, as “opinion formers" be thrilled to have a former journalist in number ten. He was successful as a journalist, but without conforming to their “norms", or forming opinions of which they approved. That is why they dislike him so, and boy does it show!

 

So if they manage to get rid of Boris, the confirmed Tory voters will still vote Tory. But the rest, who were largely responsible for putting the party in government, probably won't.

If the Tories do squeak to victory having ousted Johnson (I don't think they will) then they will have to deal with a media which has decided it can, does and will call the shots; and essentially because the Tory remainers will have ignited it, another chapter in the Tory civil war over Europe. Nigel Farage, essentially a Tory albeit one who doesn't pay a subscription, will reappear on the ramparts. The “red wall" fell to the Tories because 1) people could relate to Boris, and 2) because Nigel Farage effectively told them to vote Tory. Either way, if they oust Johnson they are knackered, electorally and in terms of their internal politics.

It doesn't really matter what they or anyone else campaigned on.   The UK was on the path to leaving the EU the moment the ink dried on the accession treaty that resulted in 300,000 inwards migration every year.   Just because you are the type of person that is influenced by whats displayed on a poster does not mean the rest of the population is.
