Former politician and soapy massage boss Chuwit Kamolwisit was at his firebrand best in a Facebook post at the weekend.

 

He was commenting on a Supreme Court decision due tomorrow in relation to the building of 396 police stations. 

 

He explained the history of those involved in the case including former DPM Chalerm Yubamrung and Suthep Thaugsuban who gave his permission to the building, reported Siam Rath. 

 

Chuwit said it was as clear a case or corruption as could be.

 

Speaking facetiously, he said that no one is as good at fighting corruption as the Thais. 

 

Such a clear cut case and "it's only taken ten years" to come to a decision, he said ironically. 

 

Famously former PM Prayuth Chan-ocha promised to end corruption in 20 years, notes ASEAN NOW. 

 

Chuwit referred to corruption as an "Epic Forgotten World". 

 

Some bent leaders were living "the life of Riley" abroad on their ill-gotten gains.

 

Others just hoped it would all blow over and bided their time until it did. 

 

Corruption in this case was like snatch theft in the market with the thief wearing a red shirt and with bells round his neck.

 

It was that obvious.

 

It was over the building of 2-4 story police stations.

 

It should have been a simple matter to get the stations built.

 

Instead corruption took over.

Love him, legend. 

What he really meant to say, is that no country talks about fighting corruption as much as Thailand, and is as insincere about it, and does as little to accomplish it, as this place.

 

One has to be good at reading between the lines in a place as weak as Thailand is, when it comes to an earnest desire to get rid of the rot in the system. 

 

As he said "some bent leaders were living the life of Riley" abroad on their ill-gotten gains. Let us hope Prayuth, Prawit and Anutin join that group after they are gone from politics, and the extent of their misadventures are uncovered. 

 

 

Still awaiting Sutheps prison term for being associated with the murders of civilians when he was helping run the Government....

Corruption (in the thai sense) is when your enemy is getting the money you think should be going to you.

I thought Suthep was serving a 6 year prison sentence for leading PDRC rallies that paralysed Bangkok and led to turbulence in 2013 and 2014.

There's no such thing as corruption in Thailand 'til you get caught.

When I think of corruption, I immediately think of my home state and wonder how much Uber paid those politicos under the table in Sacramento to be allowed to operate as unregulated taxis in California. The bast**ds put me out of business.

“Corruption” has been used and misused in so many ways and it’s meanings are so clouded with misinterpretation that it’s almost a useless word to describe these types of crimes.

the political elite is just a corruption of democracy.

it's a question of messenger and message. he certainly is in a position to talk with authority on the subject. But you choose not to believe him?

That is a pretty poor appraisal even though intended as a joke - the reality is even if you get caught it doesn't make much difference.

Comparing "corruption" in Thailand with expat's home countries just indicates how little expats actually understand corruption in Thailand. Like veins in a Stilton it permeates every aspect of society. It isn't just business, it isn't even necessarily money driven. It is considered by 60% of the population a necessity as it oils the wheels of government. From the highest positions to the vey lowest it is an accepted part of life.

it is graft, nepotism and corruption, dictated by Sakdina and kreng Jai - a system pretty much unique to Thailand and to compare it with the corruption of the West is to misunderstand the very nature of all corruption in Thailand

I assume you are either trying to justify your own social behaviour or prostitution. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand so the very existence of a soapy massage is the result of corrupt interpretation of the law.

At least he's served time for one of his crimes, if only 11 months or so. Suthep and Chalerm haven't served any time and are much worse than Chuwit.

If there's anyone who knows the face of corruption, its Chuvit.   I'd rather have him running things than this current bunch of poseurs.

I'm glad to see Chuwit saying this. Thai politics used to be so entertaining, but it's been nothing but boring under Prayut. Well, except for the guy who had a friend who "loaned" him expensive watches.

I seem to recall that Suthep was forced into the monkhood for a while. Chalerm is one of my favorites. He started out as a Sergeant Major in the Army's Military Police and got transferred to the police when he was caught extorting merchants. Prem (remember him?) commented that he was extraordinarily ungrateful.

This guy can be a great leader, please don't get me wrong????

Lived and worked in several countries including Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Thailand beats them all for entrenched corruption.
