Water Flood In Patong & Motorbike Rental Consequences

Hello folks,

Today I rent a motorbike from my neighbor (next building) for a month. Unfortunuately, on the same date at night, a big water flood destroyed everything in my street ( about 1.5m of height of water outside my building right now) .. And the motorbike i rent is 100% broken and I AM not even sure if it is still in the same place because of the big water current ...

I am wondering, what is going to happen in this case: The person I rent from will also have his other motoribkes damaged because all the motorbikes are parked in the same place ( Imagine until now I can't even see the motorbikes cauz the water is completely covering them).

I didn't cause this to happen and I don't know how I will be handling this situation with him? What am i risking? Could I be accountable for this natural disaster ? What should I do ? I mean, I never encountred this kind of situations even in my life, so  what should I do ?

Big problem for everyone, sorry I do not have any answers for you.

Flooding in Patong has been bad for the second night in a row and seemed to peak at around 4am this morning.

People crossing Sai Kor 3 Rd (the "new" road that runs behind Jung Ceylon) were up to their thighs in water at one stage. Too deep for motorbikes and quite a few cars stranded. Lets hope the rain eases and the water goes down quickly for everyone. People trying to get home from Bangla Rd clubs etc could not get a motorbike taxi or car it appears.

Well  If you are one your first holiday to Thailand, you have to see it on the  bright side: you are on a crash course in Thainess. If you want after hours extra tuition there is a guy here, by the name of "Nera water", or something...

I would say, it totally depends on the guy you rent from. I guess he could make you responsible, but can also chose not to. I find it hard to see that you can do anything about it. Welcome to Thailand.

Do you have your own insurance?

 

In this circumstance - who do you think is responsible and who do you think should lose out?

I have just spoken to a friend of mine who owns a motorbike rental business, and he says that it is written into the rental contract, that the renter is responsible for any damage which occurs during the duration of the rental – – in other words the renter is charged for any damage, which includes flood damage.

 

On the bright side, he said that the bikes are rarely "written off" due to flood damage, and although some electrical parts may need to be replaced (LED lights etc), the rest is all about cleaning, removing any mud/sludge/sand and completely drying it out.

 

So you might not be up for a lot of money, perhaps just a few thousand baht??

A mechanic charged me 2500 baht to repair it . Is that alot ? Should I try to negotiate the price ?

Seems logical, if you rent something you have to return it the way you got it. Sure flooding is bad but its just something that can happen.

But the guy is lucky the price of 2500 bt  seems right I had my bike flooded in the past and they repaired it for a similar price

2500 Baht is a bargain compared to what the owner of the rental business could potentially hit you up for. Just hurry up get it done and get the bike back to the rental shop asap and be done with it.
