For many, Thailand’s UN vote on Russia still a puzzle

Featured Replies

The last three words in their statement for the reason for abstention says it all really....."global economic collapse".

It frightened the life out of them.

The truth is Russia is bombing innocent civilians, hospitals, schools and no Thailand likes to sit on the fence when it comes to foreign affairs.

  • Wen you know the truth with what is actually going on , Thailand has done the right thing 100%

Anyone who has lived in Thailand long enough knows exactly why they voted the way they did, regardless of whether you agree or disagree.

I can agree that the world is changing, but IMO the winner won't be the greedy, decadent, soft, bogged down in stupidities west.

If, as you believe, Thailand is choosing a side, IMO they are choosing the winning side.

Brush up on your Mandrin, China will rule the world of the future! Nihao ma!

LOS has held this position for centuries in regard to such foreign events, nothing new in this stance.

As to those who say; ' Good to not get involved in politics in this or that region of the globe, or its 'woke', or Putins a great white-man and we as white men should always side with 'our' (?) race etc.'

I'm want to reflect upon the writing by a survivor of Sobibor (concentration and extermination camp WWII).

He said; 'When they came for the communists nobody spoke up because they weren't communists, when they came for the socialists nobody spoke up because they weren't socialists, when they came for the homosexuals nobody spoke up because they weren't ... , when they came for the Jews nobody spoke up because they weren't ..., when they came for me there was no one left to speak up for me.

Next up Joe can we still buy some F35's please ????

and you are all forgetting what the Thailand government  is made up from for the last 8 years, if you were the Thai gov. which way would you vote?

There is a related question: Why does the USA "support" Ukraine with weapons from the USA for billions of dollars?

Do they do it because they love those freedom loving people? Or could it be possible that payments of billions to the American industrial military complex is the main reason?

But then, it sounds so much better on the news when politicians talk about helping people than sending millions to their buddies in the industrial military complex.

I guess the Russian industrial military complex wasn't as strong as they said it was. However they're doing a great job at supplying Ukraine for free, Moscow is by far the largest supplier of heavy weapons for Ukraine, well ahead of the U.S. or other allies in sheer numbers

Yes, they DO do it because they love those freedom loving people. The cynical explanation isn’t always the right one.

If anything, a more powerful Russia incorporating Ukraine would give the US Govt more reasons to increase spending on its “military industrial complex”.

It's funny that you put quotation marks around this: “military industrial complex”

Does this mean you somehow think it doesn't exist? Or why would you do that.

And who is "they" in your sentence: "Yes, they DO do it because they love those freedom loving people."

Are that all those politicians over there who can't even agree who won their last presidential election?

I understand Putin's frustration over an issue which ran for 20+ years already; at the same time I utterly disagree to his gunned foreign policy in making his point.

He could have closed the gas valves by 50% to start with but then, he is a Soviet brain and not a Russian.

Under these circumstances I understand the Thai position to abstain any many other countries too far away; what I miss is the attempt to put the problem back onto the negotiation tables and, sadly enough, even the Swiss and the Swedes, known for their diplomatic skills and calm approach, failed miserably this time.

The US, officially backing Nato's "endeavours", will be fighting this war to the last standing Ukrainian, the bills are issued in the name of Nato in Brussels and, unlike Vietnam, Afghanistan, Korea and all other places they put their nose in, these bills will be signed and paid.

The Ukrainians pay this incident with a very, very high price while nobody tries diplomacy; they could have at least tried, possibly over and over again.

I put this in quotes as it’s a term used by leftists that seems to refer to only the military spending of the US, rather than that of any other country. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that countries have to waste vast amounts of resources on defence.

I don’t see the relevance of the dispute over the winner of the last US election. Just about all US politicians, with the exception of a few on either the most extreme left or the most extreme right, utterly despise Putin for the tens of thousands of people that he’s maimed and murdered.

Mao set the 100 year marathon in 1949 when the communists took over, world dominance in 100 years ie. 2049, Little Mao (Emperor Xi) has just been reinstated for 10 years, he'll give it a good shake!

Well I can agree to certain extent, the USA couldn't care less about freedom and democracy anywhere not even in America but considering the economic state of Ukraine and the vast amount of weapons debt, not only to the US but to Europe as well, it is unlikely that this debt will ever be repaid, it will be written off as will the enormous amount of debt needed to rebuild the Ukraine after the war. There are several plus points however, future good will from Ukraine towards the west, a new NATO member which like Finland is on Russia's door step, an ideal testing ground for their latest weapons and good strategic training for NATO's officers (I assume that Ukraine has a lot of western military advisors guiding military strategy) and last but not least, a severe weakening of Russia both militarily and economically and a probable break up of the Russian federation which could serve as a warning to China. All in all NATO is going to come out stronger from this war and the west will gain more influence in Asia as China and Russia's influence weakens, it's money well spent.

Actually Zelensky won the presidency on democratic elections, gaining 73% of the votes, a landslide win, his nearest competitor being Poroshenko who got just 24%. After the loss Poroshenko said Zelensky was too inexperienced to stand up to Russia effectively....................lol

Ah, no Zelensky has not been killing thousands of his own Russian speaking people, go back and do some basic research. Putin had also declared peace talks dead just two weeks before the Boris visit.

You're counting on people being ignorant or too lazy to look up the history for themselves. Everything you wrote is either a complete lie or a misrepresentations of the truth. Zelensky is a US puppet and the way he came to power was through a coup in 2014. A coup that was financed by the US and EU and carried out by neo-Nazi troops from the Svoboda party. They have since killed over 14,000 Russian speaking Ukrainians in the now annexed regions. Putin was ready to sign the peace deal but he knew that western involvement would likely make it impossible.

The way thousands of russians are fleeing the "draft" to russia military maybe thailand would get more russian "tourists" by welcoming this group....also i suspect it may well have a lot more to do with buying russian oil and gas than with tourists....Thailand has it's own dictator wannabe coup crew as well as Burma next door so it appears that the thai powers that be are fond of fellow dictators so they will support them regardless of invasions, killing off dissidents, etc.

They are welcome by this government; Russian planes are allowed to enter and leave Thai airspace, but that raises an interesting point, how does Putin feel about Thailand, welcoming 'draft' dodgers.

Not puzzling at all, as TH, like myself, probably doesn't know who to believe, or even care.  So instead of ignorantly voting without knowing the facts, simply gave it a pass.

Choosing to Abstain, Thailand clearly condones War Crimes by the murderous

Russian regime. You can't have it both ways;  Russian tourists over silence of

the bombing of innocent people.

As we all know Thailand is more concerned  about Tourists ????

coming to Thailand ????????

Russian Chinese Indian their biggest customers  business wise as well ????

Jeez, the world must be full of thick politicians or ignorant ones that cannot see what every single foreigner living here can see - It's about tourism and money - not about having good moral standards or supporting Russia ! If Russia has been say Peru invading Brazil, they would be condemning it to the roof tops

Peru invading Brazil? Please don't give the war mongering US more ideas for stirring up another conflict .... it's been enough with funding the Iraq/Iran war, Iraq war under false pretence, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan (that fed the military companies well for years), now the European theatre with Ukraine. if Peru does invade Brazil, we know where it was suggested ????

No doubt, Thailand would expect other countries to support them if they were invaded by a neighbouring country?

It's a USA-UK-NATO-EU vs RU conflict and been going on since end of WW2.

Nothing has changed, and nothing will.

4 hours ago, thaibeachlovers said:

and what is wrong with that? Do you blame Switzerland for not taking sides in WW2?

Historically Switzerland has been the world haven as a politically natural and has hence been available to opposing sides in any conflict as an impartially and unbiased country to which peaceful ideas and solutions can safely be negotiated and agreed.
