Anger grows over land for foreigners plan as ex-MP says Thais may face a ban in upmarket areas

This seems to be a total non-story in reality, but a huge one in political consciousness.

 

There was a 15-minute segment on Thai primetime TV last night titled "Ready or not? Thailand plans foreign ownership of land."

 

As if some foreigner were about to spend 40m baht to buy a rai of land in Khon Kaen and push a couple of Isaan rice farmers off their land.

 

I would imagine that the areas of Thailand where such a purchase makes sense would be limited to dense urban areas where cashed-up foreigners might compete with cashed-up Thais.

 

The symbolism is what counts, I suppose.

The semi-divine Thais can buy now whatever they want and quite obviously are not doing it as the loose change might be missing for the "upmarket areas". Except the selected few with ....illions of cash stashed away, all the others need to finance everything, so what are you talking about?

See the condominium act, offers in the "alien" section are generally more expensive than the very same apartment in the "Thai only" corner. Exception to that is, that an alien PR holder can buy in the "Thai only" corner without proof of having brought in the payment from outside Thailand. Draw-back is, that his condominium can only be sold to a fellow PR holder ........ or a Thai. 

The latest fart on this subject of land ownership is more wet than earlier issues but no wonder, with those dinosaurs at the helm ..........

That's true, don't know how they manage it. Several houses on our estate have been bought by Chinese nationals and they somehow buy land at inflated prices.

No Thai would want to buy any land specifically earmarked for foreigners because the price per square wah would be rediculously overpriced as the developer tried to price gouge the falang.

 

Better to buy good land in a local area well away from foreigner specific developments if you do want to buy land. I am happy for my wife to soley own any land assets. 

 

Injecting foreigners into the land market might just reinforce the strength of the real estate market.

 

The problem I see with "allowing foreigners" to buy land is that a future government could easily reverse that decision and force foreigners to then have to sell under duress, as has happened elsewhere in Asia.

I think they have good reason to be concerned when you look around the world where foreigners freely buy property . 

Only guarantee is that housing will become even more unobtainable for Thai citizens if land purchase becomes easier for foreigners to buy .

Now that Liz Truss is effectively surplus to requirements in the UK maybe she could get a job advising the Thai Government on U-Turns in Policy.

The other side of the coin , Thai's if they have the cash can buy land

in the West , no problem , they seem to forget Farangs cannot take

it away with them it's always part of Thailand , it's the 1 % that have

the largest land holdings here ,grabbed or bought .

It's ok that the foreigner to pay for Everything But it must be in a Thai name ,Like GF/Wife /Mia noi/Company. 

Maybe the foreign countries should stop the Thais  that live there from buying Land and houses .

Do same, the Thai Pays but must be in the Foreigners name .

I never understand this quote that is perpetuated "Thailand has never been colonised"!!! Depending how far you go back in history Khmer, India and let us not forgetting in recent historical times Japan and the historical big brother China. If you know grass root thais they inevitably fall into Thai Chinese, Thai Japanese, Thai Chinese or Thai Malay and each group are proud of their heritage. Thailand did not keep any of the old empires out, Thailand was a convenient buffer for them.

I think it's more about needing to feel superior to foreigners.  Many other countries covert Westerners and the contribution they make to their societies, both financially and intellectually.  Often Thai people seem to look down on Westerners when it comes to education, even though they have a very poor education system, and take their custom very much for granted when it comes to tourism, even though they very much need it.

If they limited education to the ability to ape a proper Wai I'd agree  with you, but I reckon that they (the educated hiso ones) are painfully aware of that: Nobel prizes by country. The others, probably 69 millions of them, are kept unaware of the existence of such distinction.

That's kind of my point. Nationalism is generally a tool for keeping the masses in line. It isn't done for their benefit.

 

Disliking anything foreign ensures that the only voice the masses listen to are the ones in control. The poor treatment of foreigners is just a kind of side effect.

Plenty of land available for housing... Most of it under water in the rainy season. Rice farms can be taken off the Sor Por Kor holders and loss making rice farms, golf courses... Have you seen how green Thailand is from.the air? 140 people per square kilometre population density...

Oh, please. The Thais are doing a fine job of pushing up land and housing prices, on their own. We would not make a dent into that market. 

 

There should be no cost minimum. Every foreigner with a work, retirement or marriage visa should be entitled to buy up to 2 rai, and build on it and own the home in their name. This comes down to courtesy, respect, honor and dignity, shown to Thailand's expat population. Nothing more.

Hi Scott , there is plenty of land in Canada too and they have put a stop to foreign buyers . 

The reason why Canada has restricted foreign ownership is because of there own citizens are being forced out of the property market .

The law was first bought in to stop Chinese from owning all the land. Farangs were not even considered back then.

True to a point, it was to protect Northern regions from the Chinese but since then things have changed due to corruption.
