A majority of Americans say he hasn’t accomplished much and many Democrats aren’t thrilled at the prospect of him running for reelection. But when President Joe Biden took to the House Chamber on Tuesday for his annual State of the Union address, his message was one of unadulterated optimism – gloom be damned.

Delivering what was widely viewed as a test run for his reelection announcement, Biden claimed credit for progress made during his first two years in office while stressing the job isn’t finished.

He faced sometimes-unruly Republicans, with whom he energetically sparred from the podium on spending cuts.

Greene at one point screamed "LIAR" when Biden said that some Republicans want to sunset Social Security and Medicare. It was part of a proposal presented by Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) during the last election cycle. It was roundly denounced by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Entitlement, Spending Cap Plans Linked by GOP to Debt-Limit Deal

The Republican Study Committee, the largest group of House Republicans, released a budget plan in June that called on lawmakers to gradually raise the Medicare age of eligibility to 67 and the Social Security eligibility to 70 before indexing both to life expectancy. It backed withholding payments to those who retired early and had earnings over a certain limit. And it endorsed the consideration of options to reduce payroll taxes that fund Social Security and redirect them to private alternatives.

Biden speech takeaways: More conciliation than conflict

 

Biden’s speech almost defiantly ignored the bitter divisions between Republicans and Democrats and his own low standing with the public.

 

He returned repeatedly to common ground, making the case that both parties can back U.S. factories, new businesses being formed and the funding of 20,000 infrastructure projects. When Biden hit each of these themes, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy politely clapped, evening standing to applaud at one point.

I'm not going to sit through a speech when I can read the takeaways. Can you share with us any specific proposals she made? Republicans have made spending the major issue. What exactly did she propose to lower spending? Given that no one reported it, it seems pretty certain that cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits did not figure in her speech. I did see that she criticized Biden for being twice her age.

Well, she was right at least on one thing:
