The advantages of owning an EV is such that very few EV owners will ever consider purchasing an ICE vehicle again.

I certainly won't buy an ICE vehicle again.

Yea ... what they said.

Thankfully I rolled the dice, as I was quite skeptical myself, especially since just buying an ICEV we really liked, a mere 18 months earlier.

Would never consider an ICEV again.  All you skeptics out there, really need to hire/rent one a week.  Take a few local O&As, nothing requiring CS, all within about 250 kms R/T.  On some nice roads.  Pretty sure you'll be converted to the EV cult ????

EV's are not, and will not be a cult, because everyone will be driving them in the not too near motoring future.

What will come to the fore with EV"s is brand names for quality, then the cheapies like MG.....????

Transman - I just Googled and I think I found a photo of you which reveals how you know that MGs are gonna prove to be of poor quality in the future.

I was wondering how you know!858491901_Image(1).png.5ffa1183a5903f81694dfda13f6de38c.png

He seems to have a problem with a Chinese carmaker taking a down and out British name like MG and restoring it to being one of the leading EV brands in the world.

Most Brits wouldn't know that MG used to be a British company......and those that did would be mainly the Brexit voting thicko's.  Thankfully they are getting less,  demographics and all that......

If a Brexit voting thicko knows that MG used to be a British company, that means that a pro-EU Brit who didn’t realise that MG used to be British is… more thick?

This morning I created a spreadsheet for myself comparing fuel costs/savings between my Toyota Fortuner 3.0L diesel engine vehicle and the BYD Atto 3 Extended Range EV I'm in the process of buying.  I know, I know, some of you (or maybe all of you) are thinking it's just another one of those durn unrealistic fuel cost comparisons between ICE and EV vehicles....boring. But hey, here it is anyway!

All the cost factors are "actual/real world" numbers with the exception of the "Atto 3 Kilometers per KWH" number as that number is a best estimate at this time.   Cost factors like the "exact" cost of diesel fuel, the "exact" cost of each additional KWH of electricity used at my home to charge the EV, the "exact" kilometers per liter I get with my Fortuner over the last 15 years of driving, etc.  Note:  I've seen all kinds of "cost per KWH" amounts for home charging in various threads...Bt3.5, 4.5, 5.5, etc., and it's obviously some folks were only guessing as to how much they pay at home for each additional KWH they use and some of the estimates were probably only talking their "basic" rate and didn't include the Ft charge, meter fee, VAT, etc., that gets tacked onto the basic rate.  The Bt5.45/KWH I used in the spreadsheet is exactly what I will pay (including all basic rate/Ft/Meter Fee/VAT) for each additional KWH I will use when home charging the EV.

But the Atto Kilometers per KWH used is not exact (at this time it's just a best estimate) since I haven't had a chance to do a couple months of real world driving with it; instead, I must rely on testing under various driving conditions done by testing organizations.

While the Atto 3 sales literature says it uses 149Wh/Km, in my calculation below to reach a 5.46 Kilometers per KWH I use 183Wh/Km as part of the underlying formula to reach that 5.46 Kilometers per KWH.  Using the 183Wh vs 149Wh means I'm lowering the kilometers per KWH efficiency by approx. 24%....or said another way from 6.71 kilometers per KWH based on BYD sales literature to probably a more realistic 5.46.   For now I'm using 183Wh based on testing results posted at this webpage:  https://ev-database.org/car/1782/BYD-ATTO-3#efficiency.  Now none of the testing results at that webpage reflect driving in hot tropical weather but in cold & mild weather conditions.  Take a look at the webpage and you'll see what I mean.

You'll see from the spreadsheet below my fuel (diesel or electricity) savings should be approx 65%.   Or said another way this particular cost analysis shows my fuel cost for the Atto will be exactly 1 baht for each kilometer vs 2.88 baht for the Fortuner.  1,000km in the Fortuner costs Bt2,889 for fuel....in the Atto Bt997.   I even included a summary of savings over various kilometers driven like the 160,000Km covering the Atto warranty period and 315,000Km my Fortuner currently has under its odometer.   Note: I set the spreadsheet to round to 2 decimal points for display purposes even although the underlying formulas go beyond 2 decimal points in some cases...just wanted as much accuracy as possible.

Fuel Cost Comparison between a Fortuner and Atto

image.png.0992d5b33469ebdcc1ed76a8f5277400.png

Today I got my monthly home electric bill and I noticed the Ft charge had went way down....from 0.9119/KWH to 0.2048/KWH.   As you know the Ft charge is a very significant portion of a person's electric bill.  I had also monitored a few more tanks of diesel fuel in my Toyota Fortuner to update my Km/Liter number.   So, I decided to update above fuel comparison primarily due to the big drop in electricity Ft fee.

At the bottom is the updated comparison.   Probably the most key comparison number below in how much cheaper "fuel cost wise per kilometer driven" the BYD Atto 3 will be compared to my Toyota Fortuner 3.0L Diesel---a little over 68% cheaper per kilometer....a little over two-thirds cheaper.

Or another way to easily remember the Diesel to Electric costs is every kilometer driven in the Fortuner costs me approx Bt3 in diesel fuel while every kilometer driven in the Atto will cost approx Bt1 in electricity fuel....or simply a two-thirds savings.

Since I've seen many posts where people have stated widely varying fossil fuel and electricity costs (all over the map especially for KWH costs) I wanted to see specifically what my costs were since I know exactly how much (to the stang) each additional KWH pumped in the EV at home from the wall charger will cost me and exactly how much my diesel fuel costs are.   Here's the updated comparison:

Update on the red Atto I'm been trying to buy.  The wife and I talked face-to-face with the dealership manager and our salesperson this morning.....took a look at the red Atto that had become available...it will be ready for pickup the afternoon of 25 Oct/Wed.  Will go get the cashiers check cut 24 Oct.

Also, this morning "before" going to the dealership, the wife and I got to talk to the neighbor on our soi who got a white Atto 4 days ago.  He bought it from the same dealership we are buying our red Atto from...it took him less than a week from booking to delivery of his white Atto.  A white vehicle is quick to get.

We had a good 45 minute talk....he even let us take his Atto for a test drive while we talked more about the car.   He's very happy with it.  He said based on his 4 days of driving it "appears/his early estimate of" the real-world range for him which is predominately "in Bangkok" driving is going to be around 430Km vs the car's pie in the sky 480Km NEDC rating....but he said  again his 430Km estimate is only based on 4 days of driving....he hasn't even had to recharge yet....so more driving needed to get a better estimate.

He also said for a brief period he considered getting a Seal but decided against it due flooded streets that all too often occur...flooding that occurs so fast you simply can't avoid from going thru it....like even in our moobaan which occurred just last night when it rained cats and dogs for 30 minutes....the sois flooded to curb level for about an hour and then subsided. He decided to stick with the Atto SUV due to its higher ground clearance of 175mm vs 120mm for the Seal.  Plus he really preferred a SUV type style due to what he needs in a vehicle...both him and I are on the same wavelength regarding that.

We asked him about installation of the free wall charger.  He said the wall charger installer had called him a few days after getting the car to say it would be 1 to 2 weeks to install the charger due to a big queue (lot of BYD's being sold).   At the dealership today the salesperson said she would try to get the installer to call us over the coming days to get a jump on the installation process---but I'm not holding my breath we'll get a call before we actually receive the car.  The dealership also confirmed it would indeed probably take 2 weeks to get the free wall charger installed due to backlog.

So, it looks like the journey to get a red Atto is almost over....it appears to be clear sailing between now and Wed afternoon unless my bank goes bankrupt, the dealership burns down, the Atto is stolen from the dealership, the moon falls on the Earth, etc.   Knock on wood (my head)....hopefully no such events will occur.

This Saturday at the dealership here in Bangkok it was VERY busy....many people in the showroom and service center.  We were there for about 1.5 hours and saw two people receive their Seals (one black, one blue) during the little delivery ceremony the dealership does with a big bow on the car....pictures, etc.   And in the dealership garage area where they prep cars for delivery there were around a dozen cars, mostly Atto's and Seals with a few Dolphins, being prepped for delivery over the next few days.  One busy place especially on weekends.

OK, I pickup my Atto at 1pm tomorrow/25 Oct....took a little over a month to get primarily because I switched from wanting a white Atto to a red Atto about a week after booking.  Rounding-up a red Atto took almost a month; I could have got a white/blue/gray/green Atto in less than a week.

And I'm proud to announce I have just competed reading the entire 202 page Atto 3 Users Manual...a day before vehicle pickup. I've also watched about a thousand (it seems like) Youtube videos talking the Atto.  I'm now pretty sure I will be able to open the door by myself, position the driver's seat, start the car, and drive home (slowly) without hitting any Grab motorcyclist.   Wish me luck.

Houston,  Tranquility base here...Pib's Atto has landed in his driveway.

Pib is now accomplishing Infotainment system checks....trying to figure out how to use all the possible settings....he's hoping he doesn't accidently trigger some type of James Bond injection seat.    Arrived home from the dealership with a 99% charge remaining and the "granny" charger is now hooked-up....correction, granny charger has topped the charge back up to 100%....granny charger just unplugged.  All systems are a Go.   Tranquility base out.

Not a chance in Hell. Higher purchase price, higher insurance premiums if you can find someone to insure. High cost long term maitenance, possibility of battery fire/thermal runaway, not practicle for people travelling long distances, and recently EV's have taken a nose dive in resale value.

Your ignorance shines ... 😂

... higher cost - cheaper than Toyota Cross (made in TH)

.... ins ... less than the ICE version, also 25% higher insured value

... resale, now has a higher insured value than a new one 🤣

... lowest maintenance & operating cost of any ICEV

... expect 500k kms, trouble free from motor & battery bank

... thermal runaway .... that's funny & BS

... 3-4 hrs on Thai roads is all I want to drive at 1 time.

... have no desire to sell, why would I ?

This might be pretty interesting to some....especially BYD Atto 3 owners like myself.

Below article shows a BYD Yuan Plus (a.k.a.,) BYD Atto 3 broken down into its major components with many pictures.  Google Translate is your friend with this article and the pictures have annotation/descriptions in Chinese so I used my computer to display/translate the core article while at the same time using using my smartphone to view & google translate the wording on the pictures.

Not so -  when I mentioned MG a few years ago to my nearly 30 year-old daughter, she said she'd never heard of the brand before.

Why would I want a Walmart Tesla?  That's like banging your aunty when could have your cousin.
