A British man last night was accused of starting a fire at The Y Smart Hotel in Chiang Mai after having a heated argument with a receptionist. Fortunately, six Thai and foreign guests were rescued from the building unharmed.

The fire broke out at 12.10am at The Y Smart Hotel on Kaeo Nawarat Soi 5 Road in the Wat Kate sub-district near Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 2 or Arcade Bus Terminal.

Six people, both foreign and Thai, were trapped on the third floor of the building. They moved to their balconies and waited for help. Firefighters from Chiang Mai Provincial Disaster Preventions and Mitigation Department quickly arrived on the scene and managed to extinguish the fire in 30 minutes and rescue the six trapped victims. All of them were reported unharmed.

According to the rescue team, the fire started in room number 203 on the second floor. The receptionist on duty, Sahasawat, stated that the room was rented by a 27 year old British man who was staying alone in the hotel.

Perhaps think a little deeper.

There is the dual facet of a lot of Brits in Thailand (more than many of the nationalities) and the English Language media and press which is picked up by sites such as this....  Its hardly surprising we hear of more Brits involved in such incidents.

Is that disportioncate to the number of Brits in Thailand ?  I’m not sure.

But what I am confident of is that we hear of more ‘British centric’ reports from England language media which may influence the bias of those who don’t recognise this.

Not condoning what this guy did of course, as another poster mentioned, it's attempted murder and IMO should be treated with the utmost severity - I hope he isn’t just ‘arrested and deported’.

After the Russians the Brits are second to behave bad. Lack of common sense and education.

there could be a logical explanation for all this..why not wait until the RTP and Fire Dept investigation has finished before jumping out of the 2nd floor window to conclusions

It certainly sounds like he may be guilty but nothing quite like hang him before we hear his side.

Who knows he may have been complaining about sparks flying from electricity socket to an un moved receptionist if it turns out he is an arsonist then let him rot in jail eating fish head soup. I am British and sure I speak for 99% of my fellow countrymen if guilty let them face the consequences.

As I'm sure any sane person feels irrelevant of the nationality of the guilty

My personal experience is that the French are by far the most aggressive nation not the British, closely followed by South African and Australia

I think the mention of him being British is really incidental.  The guy clearly has issues and that can happen regardless of nationality.

Unless there are genuine per capita statistics on bad behaviour by nationality, I wouldn't speculate on anything else.

Not sure if records are kept of nationality of firestarters. Chiang Mai does not want him or his petty disputes, wherever he is from.

Perhaps we should band together and form a good Samaritans club. To counter all this bad news from retrograde foreigners wreaking their brand of mischief here. They do not exactly give us foreigners a good name. Can't they help themsleves? Is it simply impossible for these hooligans to behave, no matter where they are? Where is the respect and courtesy?

The fact is, most of us behave responsibly, and have goodwill toward our Thai hosts and friends. I have no idea to what extent this kind of news is amplified in the Thai press here. Hopefully, they realize most of us are very decent souls. One can only hope a goon like this clown gets punished severely, and also banned for life. People could have died.

Quite so, he hasn't, as yet, been tried in a court and convicted of anything, but many posters automatically jump to conclusions as you have said?

It would seem many posters hate the Brits for some reason?

Just a other quality Tourist from the UK ????????

Will get his just deserts when the police catch up with him if guilty of causing the fire jail deport ????

I'm a Brit and totally ashamed of what my fellow Brits get up to when travelling abroad - not only to Thailand. I believe it's due to the cradle to grave nanny state we live in, with an inbred feeling of entitlement thrown in. There really is very little respect for others nowadays.

Exactly.....  For all anyone knows the guy could have been burning a big fatty in order to calm down and forgot to put it out before leaving the room.
