oh yeah, i forgot about that since i never use tiktok.

but there's a lot of really scary stupid stuff on there.

if you have kids, you should monitor what they are watching on tiktok.

https://nypost.com/article/craziest-tiktok-challenges-so-far/

Nyquil Chicken

Girl putting glue in her hair

Cereal challenge - putting cereal and milk into open mouth = risk of choking

Bendadryl challenge - taking enough Benadryl to hallucinate

Another reason not to have kids.

The only online trend I care about just now is AI generated imagery....some of it is mind-blowing..the scifi fantasy stuff is off the charts as it looks so real...it is like viewing other worlds that are inhabited.

Being jaded, this has been my first WOW moment in a long-time.

Beyond that - I don't really care if a guy has a vagi-na behind his bollsack.

Or some singer says "I'm neither male nor female."

No need to tell the world ?

I dont think I will ever have kids, unless I get hitched up with a lady who already has one maybe.

I think that is even worse than having your own children.

not necessarily. you can see what they are like before committing.

also, there's not too many women who don't want to have children.

Why? I think having your own kids is different than taking care of someones elses kids. If I had kids, I would never let them grow up in Thailand, because I could not affort the necessery schooling or give them What I see as basic knownledge and experiences. Sport, choices, activities and also free quality education as it is where I come from. Even university is free.

I agree that we all pick who we believe. I saw interviews with Bjørn Lomborg and many other people. He is no climate specialist, and he doesn't claim to be one. He analyses data and he analyses how much money is spent for what with which results. I think a lot of what he talks about makes a lot of sense.

Just one example of those climate radicals: Germany shut down all their nuclear power plants and now they use also coal power plants. Does that make any sense when protecting the climate is the big goal? No! And Germany is obviously not alone with such stupid decisions.

Nuclear power plants have their own problems, as Fukushima, Chernobyl and now Zaporizhia have demonstrated. There are also blind alleys, such as carbon capture and storage - a fossil fuel industry boondoggle.

What annoys me most is the fact Australia receives more free solar energy than almost anywhere else, and the opportunity has been wasted by venal politicians.

And Island could feed europe with cheap electric through cables. The source is right ounder their feet for almost free and with no enviromental impact as windturbines or solar panels. I guess the Kanaries could do the same, and Italy? Volcanic heat transformation to electric.

Isn't TikTok also hosting videos about lots of stupid challenges?

It seems lots of people want a Darwin Award.

The other problem with social media is the fakery.

People want to be celebreties on youtube with millions of followers. So they start digital nomad blogs and present it as a glamorous lifestyle, without showing the negative sides of that lifestyle.

I've been there, done that, never again.

Next time you have the desire to take care of another man's children, just give her your house, your car and most of your money- save yourself the trauma of living through it till you see the light and escape.

All their problems have been man made, so it's not a problem with nuclear power per se.

Fukushima was destroyed because the designers stuffed up with the back ups, not because the plant was faulty.

France has had a thriving nuclear power system for decades without, to my knowledge, any problems.

There will always be a risk - like maybe Putin invades the country. But there is nothing without risk.

If the climate would be soooooo important then lots of relative clean nuclear power plants would help a lot.

And the funny thing in Germany is: They have the nuclear power plants already. They work. But politicians decided they want clean energy with no risk, and they switched them off, at high cost. And now they use (in part) coal power plants. What a bad joke!

Lex Fridman gives me a headache.

Too much ado about nothing.

He is not half as profound as he thinks.

One thing however:  He uses nice mics for his interviews

My opinion is that the concept of "online trending" is a media construct. Media outlets create impressions of what's trending and what's popular for their own benefit to enhance use of their service or platform. How many times have you seen "taking internet by storm" or so popular it "crash the internet" or other like promotions.

As you mentioned you use little to no social media and your life continues to function normally. Thats a win in my book

I agree, especially with your last sentence. Also agree with what @simon43 said earlier.

I don't use Facebook, my Twitter account is effectively anonymous but I'm (obviously) a forum user - this and several others covering many of my interests.

The thing to remember always is "Consider the source". If a respected website such as the NHS or a major university posts something, I am inclined to read it and consider what i read there, possibly going elsewhere to confirm, deny or get more data. If it's a raggedy so-called newspaper (usually a tabloid!) then I MIGHT go elsewhere to confirm or deny, more likely, i'll ignore it. In that respect, the internet is no different from trawling through "old-fashioned" media, BUT...it's a damn sight easier to be selective.

As for "online trending", it's just fashion which is basically something for weak-minded individuals who cannot think for themselves....just remember the parable of  The Emperor's New Clothes

Too many pauses, for effect, as he pretends to deeply ponder every issue.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?

FIVE minutes later....  Ah...English Muffins.....And a carrot.

Drives me up the wall.

But...who would want to be interviewed by him...could take years off your life.

I saw him do an interview of a scientist at the Royal Society...

The guy's crazy, man.

I think he is very good in what he is doing. And he does it different than many others. Sometimes he has 4h interviews.

The beauty with shows like that is that there are many different people out there who do something similar, and it is up to us to watch what we like and ignore the others.

And obviously we don't have to see all interviews.

It's great to have a great selection.

Recently he interviewed Mark Zuckerberg. I thought it was mostly an interesting interview. And I am not a Zuckerberg fan.

I think he is able to get interesting guests because they know that he is truly interested. He doesn't have an agenda to show his guests in a certain light. He asks. And he listens. I like that.

I don't have time to watch 3 hour podcasts, but they break it down into shorter segments (ie Lex clips).

And a lot of it is over my head anyway. He sometimes interviews physicists and I don't have any knowledge of physics.

What are we comparing this to? Farting contests on TikTok? Thank god this sort of content exists and platforms like Youtube exist or I would completely lose all faith in humanity.

OK.

Honestly speaking?

Lex did a FANTASTIC job interviewing this guy, Yudkowsky!!!

So, YES, Lex DOES have his good moments.

I REALLY enjoyed this interview...Great Job...

I watched the entire thing...NON-STOP.

Sometimes I can't sleep. And then I watch an hour. And maybe the next day another hour. Maybe if I think long enough about the interviews then I recognize what makes them special. Somehow I know that sometimes the length makes them special in a way a short interview couldn't do.

How about you? Do you know about all those things which go viral? Do you care? Does it enhance your life?

Or are you mostly ignorant about trends and live a happy and, some people would say, ignorant life?

I'm 56 years old and have all of the same interests I've had since I was 18, plus a load more things that are new.  So yes, I am very active on all social media, keeping my self up to date with trends in music, fashion, technology etc

I'm the same person I was at 18 and basically I'm trying to stay 18 for as long as I can.
