On July 16, a motorbike taxi driver in Patong Beach, Phuket, attracted controversy. Accused of overcharging a foreign tourist, the driver attempted to charge 100 Baht for a ride which was supposed to cost 56 Baht.

When the tourist refused to pay the inflated fare, the situation turned violent, reported Daily News.

The incident was reported by the Facebook page, "โหดจัง จังหวัดภูเก็ต", where a video was posted showing the driver trying to assault the foreigner, who was seen trying to close a gate to protect himself.

The tourist stated that he had booked the motorbike taxi via the Grab app, with the fare set at 56 Baht to his accommodation in Patong. Upon arrival, he was surprised to be charged 100 Baht instead.

Later the same day, reports indicated the driver had turned himself in to Patong Police, admitting his involvement in the incident.

An altercation between a local motorbike taxi rider and an unidentified foreign tourist unfolded in Patong, Thailand. The disagreement, which stemmed from a fare dispute, gained social media attention yesterday after a video of the heated encounter started to circulate widely.

Yesterday, Patong Police shared details of the incident which had been shared on a Facebook page at 4.44pm. A video of the confrontation was uploaded on the ‘Hot Jung’ Facebook page and quickly gained traction among users.

The scenario unfolded when motorbike taxi rider Chamnong Salee arrived at the tourist’s accommodation for a ride that had been arranged through the popular ride-hailing app, Grab. The initial fare displayed on the app was 56 baht (US$1.6). However, on arrival, Salee refused to accept anything less than 100 baht (US$3) for the journey.

Someone who only has 43 baht...?

If the driver asked me for 56 baht at the end of the ride, I would have given him 100 baht.

I always tip honest motorbike taxis handsomely. It's always a pleasure catching these guys in Bangkok and I tip them well.

I always ask the price first, but in this case the passenger knew the price from the Grab App. Likely the rider will lose his job with Grab.

I’ve long advocated for seizures.. If you’re arrested and convicted of a crime, any assets that were used in the commission of said crime should be subject to seizure and forfeiture.

If you use a motorbike to rip someone off - and you’re convicted, then you should loose the bike.. If you sell drugs out of a house, you loose and house and -

land, etc… Criminal forfeiture is a powerful tool if used correctly and consistently.

Once you start taking people assets away, that’s when it hurts.

More and more tourist problems occurring in Phuket (several friends call it Fuket. Probably a mispronunciation but who knows).

There are good Thais and not so nice. Not more than the UK or USA.

I always get the feeling that poorly educated people feel westerners are all so rich and should pay more.

(Many feel that UK pensions are 'free' money provided by the government so why are they so stingy?)

Perhaps preparing the fare in advance 'to the baht' means jumping off, paying and walking away rapidly. I would not argue violently over a few baht because i don't know how many of his friends are around, but report the licence plate number to the police and Grab

My Grab fare is charged to my credit card automatically. I just get out of the Grab car and walk away. I wonder what the driver would have done in that case.
