5 things you love most about Thailand.

Here's mine:

 

1/ Renting a condo or a house for less than a quarter what it would cost me in Australia.

 

2/ The freedom to hop on a scooter and go shopping, or just for a cruise. Relaxed road laws, traffic fines won't break the bank.

 

3/ Having a girlfriend 23 years younger than me, who thinks the sun shines from my posterior.

 

4/ Enjoying all the permutations and combinations of the multiple cuisines available here, inexpensively.

 

5/ Knowing I won't be shoved into an aged care facility, and fed food that would make a dog puke.

 

Bonus - Seeing a specialist without BS referrals, and getting replacement medications at pharmacies without BS prescriptions.

i love the fact that my son has 2 passports and can choose where he makes his life. my wife, who despite ups and downs, is still my teacher. northern thai food, working with genuinely pleasant people and funnily, the feeling that im far from home.

 

despise the politics though.

Spot on! Or even just walk into pharmacy get most things no script, no bs meeting with doctor. Cheap too.

 

The western system is a con. Waste hours then get ripped off.

a) Pleasant beaches and islands easily accessible and affordable

b) Coffee and cheese/ham toasties from 7/11

c) Economical and reliable water and electricity supply (ass pistols are wonderful)

d) Great value internal flights, rail and coach services.

e) Warm weather (sometimes a little too hot but you can’t have everything).

What a heap of nonsense, try the food in a Thai aged care facility if you find one, I pay 11.000 baht rent per months, get hospital and doctor for free, cheap medication free train and bus rides, rent and electricity assistant, I don't need any referrals I can walk in any doctor's surgery without waiting a whole day, and many other things. My food bill is about 80 dollars per fortnight (about 1900 baht) that includes meat most days, I don't pay for water (which is included in my rent) and I collect 64.000 baht every month on pension. And also my Thai wife is 23 years younger than I, but I don't live in the rip-off cities like Sydney or Melbourne. I travel twice a year mostly to Thailand because I have many Thai friends. I am verry happy I moved back no regrets what's so ever. I could add much more but need my beauty sleep.

I am deducing from your post you are not an normal age pensioner, but some kind of vet ( Vietnam? ) with a Gold Pass and subsidized accommodation. I don't begrudge you those perks if that is the case, I respect people who have served their country.

Having said that, you are quite unrepresentative of most retirees.

I don't make a habit of it, I've been fined twice in 10 years of driving.

The last fine was on one of the few speed cameras that work in Thailand. 500 baht for speeding.

In Australia, the same traffic offense would have cost me 17,000 baht, plus 3 demerit points on my license.

You might like draconian laws, I don't.

I've never had an accident in Thailand, how about you?

This is the main thing I love about Thailand and it dwarfs any remaining four. From The Shawshank Redemption:

In quite a few countries, governments are using them to raise revenue. Road safety is secondary.

I was just thinking about this as I drove to Makro this morning. There are too many great reasons to list.

 

Let's just say I know I could NEVER have this quality of life in just about any other place on the planet.

The question was about Thailand. 
FYI electric gates, sofas, beds, coffee machines and fast internet can be found in some other countries as well.

1.  Thai food...particularly the Northern food. 

 

2.  Easy to casually socialise with friendly Thai people who don't want to get into heated debates or arguments in every conversation. 

 

3.  Lack of petty nosey complaining winging neighbours. 

 

4.  A lot more freedom in day to day life activities. 

 

5.  Smiling, good looking people (more than my home country).
