Bar Menu’s

Why do the bars not offer a menu when I go in?

I sit down and a lady comes promptly but there is no way of me knowing which kind of beer they have, if they offer mixed drinks, and what the prices are.

When I ask there is always a confused discussion with a language barrier.

Do they do this to get people to just order without thinking about it? It’s odd because every restaurant always has the menu right there when I go in.

Just ask for your favorite beer or stick with the Thai brands.

As far as food is concerned, look around and see what others are eating. If they don't have a menu, point to something you see and like and order it.

Better yet, try to learn some basic Thai. It's not that hard and most waitresses and waiters are very understanding and accommodating.

Try saying "men-yooo krup".....

Yawn, someone posting about semi-bad service in the LOS.

Thank ghod the OP never to endure bad service until he/she came to Pattaya.

Because so many of these bars are poorly run and they don't even think of the basics, like offering a menu showing what is available (and the prices!)

Because so many of these bars offer 4 flavours of beer.

Chang.

Leo.

Singha.

San Mig Light.

If one needs a drinks menu to make their selection from those.................. well I'll leave it there cause anything further I say will have the mods put me on a holiday.

I find this expectation so weird.  All beer bars have the same 4-5 beers at around the same price so ask for your favourite. As for mixed drinks, again what's your favourite (it's not as if they will be serving cocktails)

Sounds more like you're on a tight budget so need to check price before ordering? If so never order a coke without price checking, in some places its almost as much as the beer ????

In many bars what's on offer is right in front of you.

Specific drinks are not important.

Because that's the way they do it! ???? Learn to speak Thai!

Tell them what type of beer you want, and they will tell you if they do not have it.... or more likely a dumb sounding 'huuuh' noise and stupid expression.

If you are not drinking one of the four beers then best you go to a 7/11 first.

Buy a bottle of what you intend to drink, eg JD, JW etc.

Chances are your JD or JW etc in the bar will be 80% water (before the dodgy ice.)

Top up bar drink as required.????????

Here's another word you, and the OP, might care to learn. The Thai word for menu is 'menu', pronounced as 'men-oo'.

This is possibly how it goes:

OP: What type of beer do you have?

BG: Up to you.

OP: Do you have Heineken?

BG: No have.

OP: Do you have Carlsberg?

BG: No have.

OP: How much will a beer cost me?

BG: Up to you.

OP: Do you have a menu?

BG: No have.

OP: Maybe I'll go to another bar.

BG Up to you.

OP: Bye-Bye.

BG: Stupid fat ugly Falang.

2nd BG to BG:  No have customer?

BG: Up to me.

..........and so it goes on.????????

All the bars I drink in have prices advertised on the wall.

Ask to speak with the bar's sommelier, they can suggest a good paring to go with those bar peanuts. ????

If there’s no price menu they can charge whatever they want at the end. I’d rather know beforehand, especially if it’s not just one beer and I’m there for awhile.

Most places will put out the chit for each drink, but it’s after I order.

They don’t all have the same 4 beers. Some places have tiger, others don’t, one may have corona or beer Lao, others don’t.

With no menu I am drinking Leo instead of the beer Lao just because it’s an easy understood order. I could go look in the freezer myself which I sometimes do. You get the idea.

I reckon you should shop at Makro and go home to drink.

Maybe while enjoying your chosen beer(s) you can examine the receipt to ensure you weren't ripped off?????????

Do you really need a menu to decide what beer you want? Don't you have a favourite one or two so ask for those and they'll soon tell you if they don't have

As for not knowing price until the end you can actually ask the price of the beer before you order it. Plus in Pattaya they always bring a chit to you when you order each beer so there's no surprise at the end unless you don't look at the chit?

Sort of. I ordered a Heinken got a Guiness. Sent it back as it was 120 baht extra. Just stupid staff.

How dare you ask for a menu 55. I do too. Some places are a rip off.

Probably not stupid staff.

Likely didn't see any value in you.

It also gives people a chance to order a quality beer, if available. They can get more stock in as demand rises.

I think many guys just order a Leo or a Chang because there’s no menu and it’s easier to just have the staff understand “Leo” after walking around in the sun all day.

Always wondered why these top blokes were sitting there with cheap beers.

Yep, the guy in front of you didn't order it either, still trying to palm it off!
