In an unexpected development, Thailand's Justice Minister, Police Major General Thawee Sodsong, has voiced apprehensions regarding the healthcare provided to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his time in custody.

Police Lieutenant General Thawee, who supervises the Ministry of Justice, emphasized that every inmate possesses the entitlement to receive suitable medical attention, noting that more than 50,000 prisoners exercised this right in the year 2022, reported INN.

Police Lieutenant General Thawee underscored the significance of conforming to global standards for the treatment of detainees, ensuring compliance with international agreements that proscribe torture and ensure the safety of those detained.

Concerning the specific medical care afforded to Thaksin Shinawatra, Police Lieutenant General Thawee elucidated that determinations concerning his treatment at a hospital, whether it be a state or police hospital, should be made by the attending physician. Prison authorities lack the prerogative to issue directives in this matter.

He also emphasized that those casting doubts on Thaksin's medical condition should refrain from questioning the authenticity of his ailment, as the government is adhering to legal and ethical principles.

While investigations into this case are ongoing, Police Lieutenant General Thawee underscored the paramount importance of upholding the law. He confirmed that the right to seek medical treatment or temporary release is accessible to all prisoners.

However, specific details remain undisclosed due to privacy concerns. Nevertheless, trust is vested in the Department of Corrections to oversee prisoners in accordance with their rights.
