Don't believe OP stated friend is over 50.

Non O retirement perhaps not possible.

he could try Colombo, but it sounds like he may not have funds to waste trying,
i got a couple visas at Colombo in past,
The locals get refused a lot, which had me concerned first time i went
There were no other foreigners there when i applied
first time i asked the guy working there if METV was possible (when it had been stopped everywhere else)
his reply "for you (foreigner), you can get any visa you want" obviously a fee is expected.
As the 400k in bank is a new requirement when getting visa outside of TH
it could easily be overlooked for a fee at the right place

He is not Thai.

If he cannot afford to have 400k in bank for 2 months then able to withdraw the funds and use it then suggest square peg round hole.

i hope going home is a solution. add in airfare and a first, last and deposit on a rental and it can get quite expensive. not to mention no references, job history or probably credit score. not sure what country they are from but hopefully not the usa to save money.

i saw some video's where it worked out though. some are more resourceful then others.

Many Thais live pay-check to pay-check, and/or borrow money from banks, or money lenders, which both aren't really options for foreigners (unless having a work permit, or other regular income).

Correct. Going home for only a short time ('to raise cash') can be expensive, unless one owns a property back home. But if the OP did, he probably wouldn't have to worry about the 400,000 baht...

Before leaving check Thai Embassy website in his home country - what is needed for 90 day non-immigrant Visa to visit family.

Go home and earn/save some money - get all the paperwork needed together.

When ready apply for a 90 day non-immigrant Visa to visit the wife.

Come back on the 90 day non-immigrant Visa.

Deposit the 400K in bank account in your name ASAP after arriving.

Go see local Immigration with Thai wife and ask what is needed for 12 month extension (varies Office to Office).

Show bank book with the 400K and Passport with non-immigrant Visa - that will help get the right answers.

Go back tio Immi Office and apply the date they say to come back and apply.

Good Luck.

he would probably need to lean on his wife a bit, or her family (😅), and just contribute some money in

Good luck with that. My ex-girlfriend, who had a great income, and spent a lot of money on creams and potions, didn't worry about my financials, but expected me to pay for everything, despite the fact that, at the time, my income was exactly zero... If very lucky, perhaps, the wife could 'guarantee' a loan for your friend.

And where is your "friend'' going to get 400k in 10 months after the monies gone? will his wife support herself and him? Good luck with that.

Zero income does not mean zero savings

So the wife will pay all power bills, water, gas, rent or does she own a house or apartment, internet, home repairs, will buy him western food when he is bored with Thai food, replace electrical goods when needed, washing powder, dreaming he is.

And yet he does not even have 10k GBP that's pretty much naff all. Will she pay for his flight?

Edit; will his wife top up his personal Thai bank account in 10 months time. does she have kids.

I think what usually happens is people just get stuck back in the home country and don't return. it's more like they just ran out of money period, and they are saying it in a nice way.

Personally, these days, I wouldn't go back home (to work, then fund a life in Asia) for less than five years. Unless, of course, I were a highly-paid specialist, but then, of course, why live in Asia, worrying about not having even 400,000 baht...

Money is not a problem for him as he run a business to his country but his extension is going to expire in about 2 months and he will not have 400k yet into his bank account for that time. He could use an agent but he prefer to go back to his country also because he has a family over there and he doesn't see them since long time. He just want to reach the 400k and keep them into his bank account. He doesn't have any problem about money coz he earn every month. He can come back to Thailand soon and apply again for a new extension based on marriage with the 400k as requirements

He's got to get himself a non-O Visa before he can get a one-year extension. You're aware of that, right?

This is the most convoluted story I've ever heard.

He has a business, but no money, but apparently he earns every month so money is not a problem..wtf.

And where is he getting the money for the airfares back and forth....idiotic.

Spot on...
