Pattaya Police Fine Taxi Drivers for Assaulting and Threatening Couple on Walking Street

Pattaya—On October 28th, 2023, the Pattaya City police officers received a complaint about motorcycle taxi drivers at Walking Street, South Pattaya, Bang Lamung, Chonburi.

The victims were Mr. Sathit Ruenjit, 41, and his girlfriend, Ms. Aranya Phato, 33. They revealed to Thai media that early in the morning on October 26th, 2023, Sathit parked his motorcycle on the roadside of Walking Street to pick his girlfriend up after work. However, one of what Sathit called alleged “taxi mafia” members chased Sathit away before punching him in the face. Another man then threatened Sathit his life and claimed to have support from an alleged influential figure.

It’s unclear according to Sathit exactly why they attacked him, with the matter under investigation. One possibility brought up by police is that the taxi drivers may have thought Sathit was a mobile app driver, their competitor.

I wonder if that influential figure is on the list which is currently made up by the government.

Or is he one of the influential figures which support the government and must be obeyed?

Probably the bike was in the place which the taxi guy thought is his parking place.

That is obviously nothing that can be allowed to happen in Thailand.

This is Thailand. Most important to be aware of your surroundings and stay under the radar.🙃🙃

Later an influential figure appeared from the back seat to confirm 🤔

So that's OK then.  I am sure Pattaya police looked into the matter thoroughly on their Saturday night shift!

False news. Pattaya does not have any influential figures.😉

In much of the world they have a very mysterious thing called a deterrent, it is virtually unknown in Thailand. When a taxi driver who assaults a tourist is fined 2,000 baht, that is an admission of a completely broken and totally ineffective judicial system. Every single judge in Thailand should just quit, and admit that they have failed miserably.

Pattaya should consider the New York City Taxi system of only allowing South Asian taxi drivers. 😁

my experience is different.

I moved to an area that is far from any MRT/BTS stations a couple of months ago.

I now take several taxi rides almost every day.

My experience is that most Taxi drivers are good-natured and helpful.

Some of them seem not to be very knowledgeable about Bangkok geography but most aren't too bad about that either.

The taxi mafia is despicable. Otherwise I agree with cdemundo. I have had more good experiences with taxi drivers than bad and I'm sometimes amazed at their geographical knowledge and how far one can go for not a huge sum. I'll say again - sometimes.

Take away his license to operate, once the rest see that their livelihood is threatened they'll soon change their behaviour.

That's a ridiculous generalisation and would be as inane as an all-inclusive claim that "Asean Now posters are the scum of the earth".

Judges don't make the laws that dictate penalties.

To a taxi rider that means war.

Well they didn't did they, a 2k fine, and back on the streets to do it again. It SHOULD be taken away and impound the bike. But the mafia boss won't allow it.

I've had my life threatened by a 'Falang' just becoz he didn't like where I parked my car, in a supermarket frigging carpark. there are a lot of aggressive idiots out there.

For sure, which is why the apps like Uber, Grab, Bolt were almost an overnight globall success.
