Legalising casinos to boost economy: Thailand House of Representatives forms committee

As far as I know, there will be 5 entertainment complexes incorporating a casino within. Strict rules for Thais and revenues will be taxed at 30%. Tourism need to have a breathe of fresh air and entertainment complex with a casino will be such tonic. I would also like to see Thailand included in Formula 1 racing destination. Thailand is getting stale with the usual tourism menus of food and temple and need to embrace new attractions. Sands, MGM and Genting have indicated interests. Chinese casinos can’t compete with these giants and I doubt any of the Chinese operators can outbid the big 3 for license. All the Chinese fears are unfounded and pure emotional

Legalizing Casinos would be a huge problem. No tea money anymore for police officers to look the other way.

They're talking about legaising casinos, not legalising gambling for the masses. Plenty of tea money still to be had.

It's sad. Casinos, weed, prostitution, a race to the bottom.

Hardly.

There are 156 countries having 2,160 casinos in the world (discounting Thailand reported with two, most likely horse betting and national lottery). Nearby is Vietnam (40), Singapore  (10), Malaysia (6 ), Cambodia (63) and Mayanmar (6). Many Indonesians gamble in Malaysia and Singapore. A little further away is China (Macau), Japan, Australia and Philippines. The USA leads the world with over two thousand casinos.

It's more a race for money that will fill government coffers without burdening its citizens, ie., higher taxes. Thus, able to provide more government assistance to its citizens.

A key to corruption-free casinos is monitoring, detecting and prosecution of casino corrupt activities. Even Chinese citizens among the world's most prolific gamblers get ensnared by foreign casino corruption. So before Thailand rushes to casino riches, it must have in place an uncorruptible system in place. That is the real challenge.

Vientiane wants to do it too. And they're much broker and more in the Chinese pocket.

Went up to Boten, the northern border town there which was a ghost town except for the casino. It was def doing some biz.

I've lost count on the number of times this has been proposed, studied, debated, committees formed, etc., etc.  Now, yet another committee, this one with an unwieldy 60 members.  Likely all yakking into the next century.

Hopefully this goes through quickly. I love a good night out at the casino. Hopefully they legalize online gambling as well so I can resume my hobby of spread betting without the use of VPN's etc.

Come on Thailand, you've legalized weed, now legalize gambling.

The nation's financial state is something you didn't give a jot about when you closed the country for two years over a flu. Coming home to roost is it?

Bangkok, the new "Vegas" of SE Asia. I never cared for Las Vegas much. I lived there for a short time. The place had a bad vibe. Seemed like half of the residents there are always on the hustle. Lots of scams and way less than ethical stuff going on. Trying to buy a used car there was a joke. Talk about scams.

A lot in common with Thailand then.    Half the Residents on the hustle, lots of Scams, low on Ethics.    Used Car Salesmen here are some of the worst Crooks you can meet on a daily basis; yes, it all sounds very familiar to what we are used to here !

I don't see it as a bad thing. 2022 Singapore Marina Bay Sands generated 1.68 billion USD in revenue. Just restrict local entry into casino but everyone has assess to the theme park around it. If it loses money then it's investor problem. If there's no player willing to invest because of no local customers then forget it period.

A starting point would be for those interested to set up free addiction centre's for those who's lives have been destroyed by gambling.

Challenge them to show the can help those with addictions and prevent exponentially increasing this number through legal channels before they make any real proposals.

More like legalizing casinos to bring in more Chinese 'tourists'.

Yes indeed. It will be interesting to see if Thais will be allowed to enter to gamble, or just foreigners (as here in Cambodia). Cambodians are not allowed to gamble.

Indeed. Hun Sen sold Cambodia to the dictator Xi. In Thailand Thais would be allowed but only the hi-so (and most of them are Thai-Chinese or Chinese) could afford to go there.

It's a good source of tax income, why not? Gambling takes place anyway illegally, this way it can be supervised and taxed. Weed and prostitution is available in every country, sometimes legally, sometimes illegally, why not legalize something you can't stop? Again, it can be supervised and taxed.

I have been saying for nearly two decades that Phuket will get Thailand's first casino.  I will go in the hotel on the mountain at the top end of Nai Harn beach.  Easy to seal it off for security and lots of parking.

They have to focus on gambling now that the natural environment is totally destroyed and the ocean water is toxic due to the faecal coliform counts.

Government is broke and money for the trough has to come from somewhere.  Taxes from gambling are needed to buy more swill.

It will bring Chinese, but seeing how Thais have a lot of Chinese blood in them, sadly Thais will fall victim to these casino's and only bad will come from it, more loan sharks and lost homes and farms, and more crime and sadness, sorry to say this but it happened in NZ, the casino's are choker with Chinese and crime rose up and you don't hear much about the poverty stricken that come from casino addiction, but they are seriously out there, just call gambler's anonymous, they will tell you what horrific damage casino's, online gambling and poky machines do., and it's families that suffer the most, it tears them apart.
