There are curmudgeon Thais who don't like farangs and curmudgeon farangs who don't like Thai's. Or think that Thai's don't like them. Or something.

Well said.

.....well it seems we have a winner in the poll.

coming in at 46.15% (so far) is 'They tolerate us'

so heres to being tolerated 🍻

thanks to everyone that voted thus far.

Tolerate implies they dislike us but put up with us.

But also, tolerate is the closest to 'general indifference' and thats probably how the vast majority of the country thinks about foreigners... We just don't register on their radar, they are busy doing other things !

kind of yeah

It really does depend on, where you live, your attitude, whether you have a rudimentary knowledge of the language, how open minded you are and what size your ego is.

If you live in a tourist center I can imagine that many farang would get on a Thai's nerves, not unlike many cities in the West who's local inhabitants moan about too many foreign holiday makers (or even holiday makers from their own country, Cornwall for instance)

If you live away from the tourist centers we are generally well accepted and genuinely liked, taking into account my remarks in my first sentence (my experience).

I live in a village in Isaan, it is a laid back existence, even the police and immigration are friendly, at my visa extension visit last week the women doing my paperwork were more interested in the photos of my son in his army uniform while one officer was chatting with my missus about the rice harvest. On my early morning walks around the lake I often get invited in to one of the houses at the lakeside for a coffee and a chat (I'm the only farang in the village) and the monks on their alms walks with their covered bowls will also stop for a chat or just a smile and a wave.

I do my best to fit in, I dress decently, I show myself at the village temple on festive days to show respect, if only for 15 minutes, nobody has ever seen me drunk, I show them genuine respect, young or old and that is reflected back to me.

My 19 years here has been a positive experience.

I have to agree strongly with this.

Does anybody else???

Figures.

If you forget about "they" and "us" and look at individual Thais and ourselves, it becomes clearer.

Some like me, some don't.

Same as farangs.

Calls to mind the Bruce Lee quote when asked if he thought of himself as Asian or Western, "I like to think of myself as a human being".

I know for some here that might be a stretch, both for them and for others.

In the case of the OP I would ask: have you a bit of a resentment against Thai people?

Because when people post questions like this it usually means they have a bug up their rear about something, and aren't just curious about what people think.

most thais have inflated/very fragile egos.

He most certainly does and this is yet another (of many) ways he tries to get some sort of justification and vindication to his own, less than ideal life that sees his problem as not how he is, but rather how everyone else is.

Take guidance from one of the great 20th century philosophers Bob who wrote 'I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways. And no message could've been any clearer. If they wanna make the world a better place,
Take a look at yourself and then make a change'.

Yes they have a great sense of pride and can be easily angered, they can be quite childish over little things but they are also extremely kind and are empathetic, a Thai friend or even a good acquaintance is very loyal and will go the extra mile for you if need be, granted you have to stroke them the right way. What I admire about them is how stoic they are in the face of adversity, a ruined crop will only cause him to emit "Hmmmmm" and shrug. A young man in the village lost his wife to an accident and was left with two small children, he is good looking and there were enough suitable women who would be prepared to marry him but after a year he was still alone, my missus asked him why he didn't take a new wife, he replied that nobody could love his children the way he did and he wouldn't risk having his children being ignored out of jealousy by a new wife so he can do without until they are a lot older, that impressed me.

Didn't expect you to understand.

Some love us, some hate us, and all shades in between. Same as anywhere really.

This is all about your attitude, their is a saying in German, "How you call into the forest is the echo you will get back," It's very sad that you can't connect in a positive way to the people in a country you have chosen to reside in. Such animosity is only going to get you negative reactions and robs you of any delightful experiences that you could so easily have. Causality has cut the path you walk along, one can only hope that causality cuts another for you, life is determined by random causal events over which we have no power, judgement is superfluous.

what on earth are you on about??

My statement stands for itself, assuming your command of the English language is sufficient to read it and you have the ability for introspection.

Thai men hate us with a passion, they love to put down beatings on foreigners! I’ve rarely felt welcomed by a Thai man!

exact opposite in Vietnam, they have called me over to sit with them, offering me food and booze, generally happy to speak with me!

totally welcomed me!

Think its a safe bet if you are behaving in THEIR country, most locals will give you a 'genuine' Thai smile and not have any particular thoughts at all about you........

Two things that were never reported as being said in the media.

The Twitter profile disappeared just hours after sharing disparaging comments attributed to the minister about "dirty and shabby farangs" bringing the Covid-19 virus to Thailand.

:shock1:

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/thai-health-minister-has-a-slash-at-dirty-farang

However, none of the farang are wearing masks This is the reason our country is being infected all around. We should be more careful of the farang than Asians.”

We all know about the famous Thai smile

but many lifers here know that the smile is fake.

There are names for the 13 smiles.

I believe that people who think one group of people all think the same thing about everyone in another group of people are boneheads.

As you are a Thai, shouldn't that be : "We (Thai) dont like them (felangs) ?

Or do you mean that Felangs don't like Thais ?

Reading the other article on the farang getting thrashed on the road by a Thai when walking with his Thai wife, may speak a bit on the feeling.

You are not Thai you might have the Thai citizenship but you always be a farang

depends on where you are and what you're up to I guess.

What I do know is that most Thais utterly despise the sexpats and will avoid them like the plague if they can.

How do you think Thai people REALLY feel about Farangs?

Question answered, I guess

Had a constant stream of Thai's (friend's and work colleagues) at my bed side when I was in hospital for 3 months.

Same for me. Only one of my farang friends showed up.

Chalk and cheese! Vietnamse aren't trapped in an antiquated culture to the extent Thai's are. Vietnamese are also better educated! I give Thai men a very wide berth!
