Where are you doing Xmas Day?

Featured Replies

Well.xmas is before us again

I often think of those of you who are single expats whether your in Thailand Philippines or Cambodia who this special day you will be with or will you be by yourself

.

I remember a few years ago visiting a friend in the sad Nirun Apartments in Pattaya ,walking through the dark sad corridors to see the apartment doors open and a lonely old shirtless farang laying in the Bed with a bottle all by himself

So wherever you are in the World what's your plans Xmas day?

For those in Asia and single do you plan on going to a bar Xmas dinner?

Alcohol related Xmas day?😂

I hate Xmas day and for those of us old we sometimes have bad memories

Also my brother used to be a policeman in Australia, every Xmas day it was calls out to family fights at Xmas family parties , old uncle Joe gets drunk has a fight with Uncle Ben he hasn't seen since 1974 etc

They call the cops then don't want to lay charges

Same with domestics in Xmas day all getting drunk and fighting

Will be a pleasant day like every other for me here. I will stay at home with my books, and b/f will head to the family farm 40km away as always.

The only thing that distinguishes Xmas for me here is the leadup, requiring email messages of good cheer to assorted family & friends back in the Antipodes.

New Year will be celebrated en famille at the farm. Dinner outside sitting on mats (and a small plastic chair for elderly Falang).

What we're really looking forward to is a week in BKK in January. Always enjoy the stay. Always enjoy the return home.

I will be working.  Xmas day is test day in Thai schools.  So I will be an exam invigilator.

The Thai testing system is the most out of date and confusing thing.

Everything is in Thai writing but we expected to do it.  Draw the seating plan on the whiteboard, arrange the desks in that order, hand the papers out in that order except there are two year groups in each room so now the papers are different because one groups is doing math and the other is doing science so now we collect the papers except math finished after 1 hour and science is 40 minutes so now we collect the papers and put them into your fingers in a certain order (the thai teacher insisted that I stack 20 papers between my fingers and another 20 between the others so they are 'in order') but we check them again anyway so collect the papers except 3 students are not finished so now there is no order and also walk up the rows in order and skip every other row because there are two subjects also ask the students to tear apart certain pages now sort the papers into different bags except the torn pages go on top and now use a huge metal spike to stab 15 test papers (i actually saw one thai teacher bleeding blood over the papers because she had cut herself) put the papers into the bags and take them to the office.  do it again for the next 5 days.

1st choice is the legendary 4 Seasons Christmas Buffet. At $200 a head (includes open pour), I will fast the night before. I thought about spending the night before there. It's $2,200 a night, 3 night minimum. Chiang Mai is back.

Alternate is Why Not? Italian near my house, about 2,000 baht for a 5 courser with a couple or carafe's of house wine. If some people from our building go, we'll probably follow. There has been tentative murmuring.

Duke's at Maya Mall has an impressive spread for 800 baht. Kantari Hills too. Last year, all of the above were booked out on the day.

Now that is a surprise, everything in Thai schools is in Thai writing. How dare they.

For me it is a holiday, which is nice but I don't have anything with X-mas so will have a long sleep.

Seafood buffet

My preferred Christmas dinner in Australia was a King Island crayfish with salad and a Vasse Felix dry white. I always thought stuffing myself with a roast dinner and plum pudding only made me uncomfortable for the rest of the day.

I am always envious of Thai flexibility, even the obese ones can fold themselves like pretzels.

Proletarian fare, although I  suppose it helps when one is gearing up for a session with the GF.

You told us before. Try making new friends. You can't live in the past. Most of my family are ah. I don't want to see them ever again.

People think of family at Xmas. If your family is scum or dead it's a bit lonely.

One of the great pleasures with living in Thailand is that I can ignore Christmas.  I am not religious and neither do I like getting ripped off with Christmas BS and over pricing.  It's a normal day for me, no different to any other.

Testing my students, as it'll be midterm week.

No Christmas holidays here.

Turn the aircon down to 22C at 8.00am. Prepare Xmas lunch for a 2.00pm start. Eat, drink and be merry with family and friends until the sun goes down, then loosen the top button of one's trousers and sit outside with a glass of something nice.

I have cooked our traditional Xmas lunch every year since moving here in 2005 - I've started planning the menu and I'm looking forward to the day.
