New Covid JN.1 Strain Sweeping Thailand

A PROMINENT virologist said this morning (Jan. 11) that a new Covid-19 strain, JN.1, has now taken hold in Thailand and is turning into the most widespread variant as it is highly contagious and this leading to a spike in the number of patients, Naewna newspaper said.

Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said in a Facebook post that a test of 14 samples in December, with there being a few more to be analysed but the total is low because of limited budget, shows JN.1 is the most common strain.

This variant first appeared in the US and mutated from the BA.2.86 strain, nicknamed Pilora, the name of an asteroid. It is highly contagious and spreads quickly and is expected to replace all other Covid variants.

This new variant, which does not have a nickname yet, became more pronounced in December and will definitely spread in the New Year.

Time to crank up the panic levels and keep the people afraid, keep them very afraid. Personally I'm more worried about catching a cold or a flu than the latest variant of an endemic virus.

People who get infected by this new stain have mild symptoms with some only having a cold and sore throat like common respiratory infections.

So, the same as all the other variants.

Considering pollution level has been up around 150 in many places, one would think just the natural reaction to that poisoning would sufficiently mask any covid infection, making accurate data very hard to come by

I will continue to wear my face mask when out in the street especially when the PM2.5.dust is getting worse here in Bangkok with no signs of improvement 😱

all those who opposed wearing the face mask might now  have a rethink .🤔

Do you wear a sarong in Thailand?

That is cultural.

Anyone else notice an u canny resemblance to marketing model numbers / names of products?

That’s just how I see it, maybe I’m biased: it’s like the new model “prestige” is out now in 2022. And then comes 2023 and they have the “eco series”. Covid model numbers are just a bit more technical, but it’s the same stuff and serves the same exact purpose.

   Why single out felangs ?

Some people want to wear masks and some dont , some Thais and felangs want to wear masks and some Thais and felangs do not .

No need to a thai/Felang divide heree

Ah yes, there's that precise scientific term "vastly" once again.

Synonyms include, "gigantic", "enormous" and "whopping".

Many people in the UK are getting what seems to be a cold but then it lingers for weeks afterwards, with runny nose, coughing and a sore throat, though not all three in all cases. My brother got it three weeks before Christmas and still has a blocked nose. The government doesn't seem very concerned as it's evidently not killing many people, but there's a lot of speculation that it's actually the Janus variant of Covid that's causing these problems, not a cold. Nobody even knows if the LFT's are able to detect Janus.

your Header is mis-leading...this is a Sub-variant of Omicron B2.86 and not a new Strain.

why would they rethink it now?

Someone unwilling to wear a mask in the thick of CVID either as preventative or simply as a courtesy is unlikely to do an about face now

rinse the nose with Non-Iodised Saline solution regularly. Kits are readily available.

The thing is even if many people have mild or moderate  covid or flu for several days there will be some with more serious issues that when they get hit with heavy respiratory infection of the lungs will end up seriously ill and need to go to hospital. And that's still happening with now more serious admissions recently reported across Europe. Take care especially the older  old.
