Did the bear have a work permit?

The question is did the volunteer have a work permit. Volunteers are required to have a work permit in Thailand.

The bear was obviously on a long term overstay since '93 and will likely do time, albeit in a caged enclosure

"Give me the 'bear' necessities. Old mother nature's recipes."  The bear looks armless.

But very handy apparently!

The spitefulness and clear absence of intelligence of some posters is so evident sometimes...

And, thankfully, so rarely seen on this forum!

No, that definitely is not "the" question, it's irrelevant to the OP.

Yes, especially when the bear is surly, surely.

Don't call me Shirley.

Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Putting your arm into a cage with any wild animal is plain stupidity, so he was carrying a knife on him & cut his own arm off to break free? The picture of him looked like he still had most of his arm, maybe mauled his hand, whatever happened I'm sure it must of been horrific & hope he gets swift medical assistance, hope he has travel insurance.....

Should be charged with carrying a knife.

Stupid head makes the whole body suffer they say. Or at least an arm.

Still the question remains how can one be so stupid to put his arm inside bears gace, presumably voluntarily

I'm pretty sure he will not be covered if he does have travel insurance. They are likely to look at this and come to the conclusion that his activity which led to this was irresponsible, which is normally the case for most policies. They don't cover extreme sports or anything with a high level of danger unless it's pre-arranged which I highly doubt was the case  So as well as unfortunately suffering life changing injuries he is also likely to be liable for massive medical bills.

Just another stupid headline AGAIN.

I sure know what I'd do first if a bear had hold of my hand and I had a knife, it wouldn't be to cut my arm or hand off, I'd stab the bloody thing first.

Have a good look at the picture, maybe lost a hand at most.

Cutting your own "appendages" off to save yourself is still a pretty gutsy thing to do  - arm, hand fingers - never mind the pedantics.

But there should have been someone close by to help sooner.

Are they mutually exclusive?  What prevents a tourist from volunteering?

Thai Daily News states he put his arm into the cage to feed the bear.

Also that his arm has been severed below the elbow; different to 'severely injured' as quoted in this report. That photo would suggest the former outcome.

Agree and blood would be pouring out through that shirt or whatever that is, also looks like I can see his fingers and knuckle through it.

Maybe it's called Shirley, surely was surly though.

Common sense usually, are you one too??

A bottle of bear-spray might have been more handy than a swiss knife.

... Probably mean what you would TRY to do first... The problem with bears is that they are difficult to stop taking your other hand too if you go after them only with a knife!

Still wonder what this guy was thinking. For me there is not enough money in this world to get me to put my hand inside bears cage!

I am not so sure that travel insurance would cover something like this as he is working as a volunteer, and surely you'd need special cover for bear feeding activities and injuries?

Reporting at its finest, not.

must be a very tough volunteer to cut off any part of his arm or hand and walk seemingly unaided to the ambulance.

questions; was his arm in the bears jaws, where did he get the knife from , was he left handed or ambidextrous, cutting any part of the human body is extremely difficult without an extremely sharp blade, why no obvious signs of massive blood loss.

Conclusion, he probably got a bite and has no loss of any part of the body.

BUT don’t let facts stand in the way of a dramatic headline T I T 😄😄

The picture is of an Asiatic Black Bear, also known as a Moon Bear. I’ve never heard the referenced Buffalo Bear before.

Cut off his hand judging from the OP photo.

My apologies to those forum members who do not see the funny side of all this - sticking your arm into a bear's cage.  How stupid can you get?

With a Swiss army knife, apparently.

So, those little scissors do have a use.😀

Buffalo bear is the literal translation of the Thai word for the species,"Miikwai".

He should have realise that in Thailand, Humans have the right  to bear arms and Bears have the right to Human arms
