Swiss man’s wife missing in Thailand after inheriting 13 million baht

The search intensifies for a Swiss national’s Thai wife, who mysteriously disappeared after inheriting a fortune of over 13 million baht (US$364,861). Despite extensive efforts, there remains no trace of Orathai (surname withheld), following a domestic dispute on January 8. Her sister, Thidarat (surname withheld), disclosed financial transactions that could provide leads in the investigation.

Thidarat revealed that Orathai had moved to Thailand approximately two years ago, settling in Kok Kwaen, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, with a new Swiss husband. On January 26, in a chilling turn of events, a young relative claimed to be possessed by Orathai’s spirit, insisting her body be searched for in a pond near where her motorcycle was abandoned. The Hook 31 Rescue Team searched but found no evidence of Orathai.

The family, undeterred by the setback, planned a continued search, securing permission from the abbot of the nearby Wat Thung Kwaen to explore a large pond within the temple’s grounds. Previously, two rounds of searching in a nearby pond necessitated draining the water with two pumps, but to no avail, reported KhaoSod.

Maybe she just ran off with the money?

She should have kept the money secret, downplayed it, you know, unlike falang in Pattaya

So her Swiss husband died and that's where she got the money?

Orathai’s financial trail began after her foreign spouse passed away in 2021, leaving her a significant sum, part of which was used to purchase assets, including a car and farmland.

There ya go, in the link to the Thaiger News.

I'll ask him!...............Oh! Hang on...................................!

Ok.  She disappeared.  So how would the young relative know/think she was dead?

As Scuba said she should have not let anyone know how much money she had.  Sounds like she had loaned money to several people too.  Perhaps one of them didn't want to pay it back.

"That's a fortune". I know I could take that amount and invest it and probably never have to work again and live a good life in Thailand.  Just like the how much do you need to retire in Thailand question it depends a lot on what level of lifestyle and healthcare you require

The Swiss husband is suspect number One.

So Her Husband dies and leaves her a fortune, she then re-marries not long after, she is/was a gambler that use to disappear for a couple of days at a time (BP), and sounds like she was a loan shark, more checking in more detail of her money flow, who did she loan money to?

. could reveal a lot more.

So many possible outcomes to this scenario.  The new Swiss husband, the sister, other relatives, even the abbot of the nearby Wat could all be possible suspects.  Or maybe she just ran off with the money to start a new life somewhere else.

The new husband IS the prime suspect according to the police.

Has a mia noi/gik.

Wife still not found.

(news from the breakfast table).

Wait for more.

So she's gambling. Maybe look for her in a Cambodian Casino. Probably money's gone.

Not a fortunate life.

There's an unwritten rule for when you win the lottery or inherit a lot of money, esp. in Thailand, namely: "Move away from where you live asap."; otherwise, 100+ relations and people claiming to be a relation will visit you asking for a loan; every Tom, Dick, and Harry (organisation and charity, fake or real, too) will pester you for money, neighbours too, and thieves will gravitate to your home. You'll never have any peace. If you don't lend the money asked for the people asking for money, including friends for decades will hate you forever.  I think that she knows the "rule" and has fled. ...  And I was hoping that she would lend me 500,000 Baht. I promise I'll pay it back!

Impossible for (most) Thais. Status is all.

I have always thought that, if my b/f won the lottery, the whole of Surin & Buriram would know within 24 Hours.

Hocus Pocus BS

The sister wants to find proof that she is dead because without proof she cannot receive the inheritance.

It's all about money in Thailand

Most Thais have little control or respect for money, this will soon be spunked away playing the big (wo)man for a couple of weeks.

I'm betting you're not a financial adviser, that's a very small sum to try and live off the returns from.
