Shouldn't UK police carry guns?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I was in a cafe today and spoke to a guy from the UK who had retired from the UK police

He was saying it's about time they carried guns there , apparently they have to call the armed police to situations.

He had been attacked multiple times and injured and no gun to defend himself instead he had run away some bloke with a baseball bat or knife  coming at you

He worked in some village

I wonder how many country police in the UK have been murdered going out to situations and no gun .

Now take an example recently in Sydney Australia, the guy going through the Bondi beach shopping centre stabbing people, the first cop on  the scene was a woman supervisor going for her lunch break ,she had a gun ,she <deleted> him dead ,

Now if that had been in the UK , she  would of ran out outside and had to wait for armed police to turn up

How many more would of been stabbed waiting for them??

How long would armed police unit taken for the nutter ?

What if your in a country area .

I see a very weak police force in the UK and I feel sorry for them

Imagine going out to violent incidents with pepper spray

Apparently even the detectives there don't even carry guns

What a weak police union they have !!!

According to your logic the crime situation in the USA would be so much better than in the UK. Is that the case?

  • Not the SAS then...........?   😉

A lot less than if they carried, guns, then every psycho or UK-redneck-rights wanna-be would also carry guns and thats dangerous.

Some police in the UK do carry guns - just not all - and thats better IMO - the professionals carrying guns have a higher level of training that from a logistical perspective simply cannot be achieved for all policemen.

I recall watching a kids rugby game (nephew playing)... quiet countryside area...  Two armed policemen had stopped off for a coffee...

Not a usual sight, but neither alarming...   we were nearby...  quite quickly the walked off and left - I guess they heard something on their radio...

Or a civilised nation...  That depends on your perspective...

Imagine a country where the public need to be controlled by guns....    you'd end up with a group of people who's sole purpose in live is to defend their rights to have guns and also fight back....   Awful.

So as this retired  guy today I spoke to.

If someone was robbing a bank or 711 or whatever and was armed he had to standby and wait .....for the armed police

By  the time they came .....

So we have a scenario here ...

A guy with a gun in Country side Australia robs a 711 ....the lone Cop turns up...pulls out his gun for him to stop.

A guy with a gun in some country village in the UK robs a 711 ....the lone Cop turns up......and sits in his locked car ....and observes

Of course he can always go out there with his pepper spray 😉

Unfortunately the namby pamby brigade don't like it when criminals get their due deserts and any officer who has fired a gun is suspended and investigated and can be up on a murder charge,it would be nice if our spineless leaders developed a backbone and the 'liberals' opened their eyes and we had the same attitude as the Australians.

Ignore my above comment - its too late to delete is now....    I didn't read who the Op was before replying... I should have known better, but certainly do now after the trolling idiocy above.

Edit: & on the same intellectual level as the Op - the UK doesn't have 7-11's !!!...

AND...  Pepper spray is not carried by the Police in the UK.... However, PAVA2 is and is similarly effective.

The Police have become so up there own arce they should not be trusted with guns. Look at Tommy Robinson getting pepper sprayed at point blank range recently. The Police we have now are no good.

What I have seen I. YouTube of UK police is they are useless

Can't fight there way out of a wet paper bag yet Western Australia just employed 500 of these useless morons because Aussies refuse to work in outback Australia 🦘 so they employed 500 ex British police who will probably only last a few months before being run out of these remote country towns and head back to the UK

They are being employed to the Kimberly region of Western Australia, good luck with that ,better then than me

Mind you ....they will have guns just advised not use them in that part of Australia

I recall a day in HK when police did not carry guns.

Sometime since that day, HK police began carrying handguns which they wear on their belts in holsters.

I prefer the UK system where police do not carry guns, but instead rely on the respect for their position among those in society as the means to project their authority.

Of course, I would advise any UK police who intend to visit parts of the USA to carry a concealed weapon.

In the USA, the police don't fool around.

Why?

Watch and learn....

American Ghetto Latino, speaking to USA Police Officer: "If you're going to shoot me, Dude, then just shoot me!"

This particular American Ghetto Latino is such a wingnut.

Can you imagine living in the same country as somebody like this?!!!

What in heaven's name has this audio transcript from Catch 22 got to do with the op post? The guy has been badly wounded by anti aircraft flak.

The 2 GGs. What a pair. Or maybe they're one and the same.

Oh yes, maybe you hadn't noticed but the Thai police are armed. Does it help? Better law enforcement?

You will find the large majority of England and Welsh residents do not wish for generally armed police (militarisation of police).Scotland and NI have separate police forces. Compared to the USA, we have an extremely low rate of homicide and killing of police, killings by police, by ratio of population.

Armed police are relatively rare in the UK. Just 4% of the 142,526 officers in England and Wales are armed (compared to all 708,000 in the US). In England and Wales only 6,677 officers are authorised to carry firearms.

Of these, 2,500 are in the Met, Britain’s largest police service.

I believe the time has now come for police to be armed. Crime has increased dramatically over recent years.  However, this should be combined with harsher and mandatory penalties/punishments for those that commit criminal offences. Current penalties do not deter.

Those carrying  guns, knives and other deadly weapons in public, (unless authorised) should serve a minimum 10 year prison sentence  (And that should mean 10 years, no time off for this and that). Anyone using a gun or other deadly weapon,  whether to harm, kill or just threaten others should receive an automatic death sentence. That of course requires the reintroduction of the death penalty, which hopefully will be by referendum sooner rather than later.

Lets not just stop with the UK. Much harsher penalties needed nowadays here in Thailand!

For the record, I was threatened with a gun by a crazed Thai man who rented property close to my house some 30 years ago. He thought I had killed his chickens. Thai police did nothing other than instruct the property owner to evict him and his chickens. Heard he got run over and killed by a bus a week later in Bangkok!  Justice served!

Don't arm the British Bobby. So what if they can't shoot a bad guy dead with 60 bullets?

<snip>

I agree. I'm a Brit living in UK, late sixties and I would be happy to see the Police armed and ready to use their guns.

There is no respect for the law any more thanks to the "PC" and "Woke" nonsense being peddled.

Even when the Police arrest some toe rag who's been (for example) causing criminal damage, assaulting people, driving at 100MPH through residential areas AND refusing to stop, or whatever, the Police have a "duty of care" to the arrestee! PATHETIC!!   🤬 There is no respect for law and order because the crims know they are going to be treated kindly whatever they've done. Time for some discipline enforced as required!

Having said all that, detailed training on how and when and where to shoot is, of course, absolutely essential.

As long as they point the gun in the right direction its good enough for me. As far as I am aware none of the feral scrotes, some still in their teens, who manage to get hold of a gun  receive any appropriate training whatsoever. If anybody is seen to be brandishing  a gun , shoot to kill should be the default setting.  No exceptions

End of last year 100+ London Metropolitan Firearms Offices handed their permits in due to the pending prosecution of on officer in the shooting of a speeding unarmed civilian.

Interesting, year on year there have been less Firearms Officers since 2018 (2841 Pemits), as of April 2023 there are only 2595. This Year's figures will be even less.

Looking at last year's stats, (April to April), there were 18,395 Firearms operations across England and Wales, or which 20% were within the Met. Out of that, only 10 incidents recorded of an officer discharging their weapon. Would be interesting to know the USA/AUS & Thailand stats for the same.

Is the UK safer than other countries, properly not, but good to know statistically if you go out, the chance of getting shot are close to zero.

So then, you would say that the situation is sort of like a...

CATCH-22?

a.  The more guns the police carry in the USA, the more police get shot with a gun?

b. The militarization of the police forces in the USA has led to the glorification of gun battles on American streets, COP Shows on TV, and the arming of criminals?

6 minutes ago, animalmagic said:

Strangely enough, when I was first in HK, for some years, I do not recall most of the police I saw there walking around on the streets carrying sidearms.
