As I'm typing this I'm watching a bunch of American yobs beating one member of an opposite group to a pulp during the University riots in the US (on TV). Do you think they'd behave any differently if they were in Thailand?  They are just yobs and thugs and that mate - is a borderless phenomenon.

 

When I first came to Thailand there were very few male tourists under 40 - except for the backpackers and they've always had their own hangouts. I rarely saw any trouble in those days.  Thailand has become far more popular with younger tourists of all nationalities - they get rat ar5ed and violent.  I've seen groups of Indian youths causing trouble with Thais, Germans fighting each other and Arabs being rude and violent towards Thai street vendors. Most of that is because they are a much younger group of tourists than we used to see.

 

I have no idea what the mix of nationalities is in percentage terms but when I visit the bar areas most of the voices I hear are British.  They may or not make up the largest group but despite what the TAT say, there's still a hell of a lot of younger Brits visiting and a large expat community so its not so unsual to find them in the news.

I have been living in Thailand for many years in one of the tourist spots, and am very fortunate in the fact that I have never actually seen a proper fight!!! A bit of pushing and shoving, but nothing ever came of it. And yes I do go out drinking at the bars!!!

 

However, I have noticed, like yourself that the attitude of the younger generation of tourists can sometimes be a bit "arrogant", and that in itself flies in the face of what I was told about dealing with Thais  - always try to be polite, and you will get polite back. 

 

Another thing which seems to be on the increase is the similar attitude among the younger Thais towards foreigners, which is not helped by the constant barrage of "farangs behaving badly" articles. Just as an example, when the local Tesco supermarket opened here a few years ago, the mostly young staff, while inexperienced, were always helpful. Now, a lot of them are sullen, and if you ask about the location of a certain item, more often you will just get a "no have" and a walk away. Also if you say "khoob-khun krab" half the time you just get ignored.

 

So the problem is universal - I reckon a fall in standards down to poor education and a lack of discipline at home, and now I sound like my Dad did!

I had an discussion with a shop owner that the person at the counter did not gave me the correct exchange.
I had paid with a 1000 baht bill and received exchange on 500 baht.
The security camera was only about 5 meter away.
But the recorded clip was not clear and I didn't make a fuzz out of it.
Solution: I always carry a 500 baht bill with me in the future and avoided that scam.
No fight involved (maybe because I was not an Englishman).

 

So.. you have to 'find a solution' to the problem of Thai's behaving in a less than honest manner at a point of sale...

Nope, thats not it, its nothing to do with your nationality and everything to do with the fact that having been here for a while you are familiar with the numerous ways in which the Thai person to whom you are handing over money may attempt to 'pull a fast one' and take precautions.

 

I do the same by always 'stating' which not I'm hading over if its a 500 baht or 1000 baht note, and get the to agree... 

Cashless payment does away with a lot of this BS, but with the TukTuks and Taxi's... its better just try and have the right change (not always possible though).

 

 

One of the possible scams I've seen is the taxi's that have this 'blue light' inside - its not for any 'cool' reason - its so you cant easily identify the colour of the cash you are holding over so they all look the same colour...  it makes it easy to make a mistake.

So let’s think through what happened here.

 

Presumably, the Brit offered either a 100 or 1000 Baht note through the window to the driver. (Did he have something to take from the boot (trunk)? I always pay while still sitting in the taxi if no luggage to take out first)

 

I notice the video does not show the part where the money changed hands, deliberately I am assuming as if the note was 100 Baht the driver would not have touched it or just possibly taken it and IMMEDIATELY pointed out that it was 100 Baht and kept it in plain sight.

 

What he would not have done, with 100% certainty, was to accept the 100 Baht and put it away somewhere so the Brit could not only not see it any longer but refused to show it to him again. That would only have happened if it was a 1000 Baht note.

 

The Brit was drunk one assumes which would have made the driver more inclined to scam anyway and like a lot of us the Brit is probably not the greatest fan of the Phuket taxi mafia and blew a fuse when scammed.

 

I have jumped in here without reading many comments so may be off track but can anyone seriously imagine the driver would have taken the “100 Baht” and tucked it away rather than immediately challenging the underpayment with the note in plain sight?

 

If the part of the conveniently edited video comes to light at the moment of money handover the truth will become obvious but I have a feeling that part has been locked away never to be seen again as it does not suit anyone involved other than the drunken Brit. Certainly not the driver or police.

 

On very rare occasions over the years I have accidentally offered a much lower note to someone that was required and without exception it was not even touched, let alone taken and hidden away so I could not see it. Just another Phuket taxi scam played on a drunk guy probably sick and tired of being scammed.

 

Silly to react the way he did (though something many people scammed by the Phuket taxi mafia probably enjoyed seeing) but fuses can blow after too many scams have happened to people, especially when drunk.

 

I have to say, as someone pointed out earlier, the face of the driver when it was over was not one of a person badly wronged and really had the look of "600 Baht is just the start Farang now police make you pay more to me and them!"
