The 44-year-old was identified by Udon Thani police on Friday as Mr Davis. The UK man offered a profuse apology to 25-year-old Jirawat Sunthorn, or Tum (inset), whom he assaulted on Wednesday morning at a PTT service station in the town. Mr Davis also agreed to pay full compensation to the Thai man. Police Colonel Phattanawong Chanphon (inset) of Udon Thani Police Station brokered a resolution to the case.

UK former mercenary, living in Thailand for 22 years, fined and warned by Udon Thani police after assault at PTT station. Man agrees to pay full compensation and apologises to the Thai victim’s family. Police cite prior cooperation with Immigration Bureau for not revoking his visa on this occasion.

It came after he was summoned by police for being involved in an assault at a PTT station in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Police, it is understood, declined to revoke the 44-year-old man’s visa due to his previous cooperation with the Immigration Bureau on Ko Samui and the fact that this was a first-time offence.

Why do the news reporters keep repeating the same slightly reworded paragraph yet manage to give very few actual details?

what visa has been on for 22 years - is that possible?

when / where was he a mercenary if he's lived in Thailand since he was 22 years old?

Some explanation would be nice.

I have multiple friends that live here after wars for good and usually work w former blackwater or other security firms as mercenaries, once they live abroad so long it's more appealing to live in places like Thailand,, a wonderful country where you can give your victims the money instead of the government court system. In America the courts take the money and victims wait forever to get restitution if ever

Someone was told to submit a 500 word article but only had 50 words of content. 😆

There is a few in Thailand that work for private military's companies, I used to know 2 of them and they worked in Iraq 1 month on 1 month off something like that, they would be on $10,000 a month, another job they could do is on the ships going past Somalia, A guy i knew who did that said that was boring but he got well paid for it,

A so called mercenary aged 22...so called living in Thailand but working as a hired mercenary to fund his stay here?

Not married, not retired he must having been bouncing around for many years doing border runs or time out of Thailand.

From the linked article:

I drank several rounds before driving my daughter into town. On the way back, I stopped at the gas station to fill up,’ Mr Davis declared.

He claimed he was unaware of his actions. However, he sincerely regretted what happened and offered apologies to both the victim and the Thai people.

So the guy was driving in a drunken blackout.  Then he assaulted some guys.

Nice...

Why don’t people read referenced articles before jumping into print?

They will see he is married, has an 18 year old daughter here, so has grounds for a visa.

Being a mercenary is not the same as Special Forces, so he could have done that from a young age.

I’m more concerned that no action was  taken in respect of his admitted drink driving, which he used as his excuse for the assault. His cooperation with Immigration must have been very strong.

So many gaps in his story, mercenary? Private security contractor possibly.

immigration refused to cancel his visa due to past cooperation on Samui what was he doing for immigration? translator, English teacher, or informant either way did he have correct visa and work permit? Lol

From the various articles on this subject, it seems the pump guy refused to pump petrol unless the falang removed the filling cap by himself.  Strange, never seen this happen in Thailand before, maybe I should get out and around more?

Sometimes the cap may remain locked and unopenable?

Former visa agent? ED visas, conversion of tourist visa to NON-O without ever leaving Thailand? Is it completely legal?

So what else do you expect? This isn't exactly Al Jazeera or CNN. It's more like your high school paper.

Expect to be told something different when taking 5 paragraphs to explain the same thing.
