Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

Where I worked one guy was decapitated by a jealous husband, a fellow Scot beaten half to death and thrown out of a second story window, then set on fire after interfering with the wrong Latina Toxica. 

 

Ask the guys who worked in the oil & gas trade how "culturally sensitive" their fellow workers were - it was an international gangbang circuit with many a deviant wife providing the entertainment. That's before the criminal element kicked in, and like all expat communities, it was soaked in alcohol. 

 

Mexico, the same, Colombia - people are on the streets protesting against expatriates - Nigeria, ffs - Brazil? My gawd

 

Criminals in the expatriate community, oooh, Betty - who would have though?? Alcoholics and sexual deviants? Shiver me timbers.

Ehh everyone is planning to leave.. They just FKed up and everything that might lack in the Philips will be there in 6-12 months if masses move. Thailand is just dying at a hardcore speed: i see owner after owners who were here 10-15-20-30 years and now back elsewhere, essentially broke from whatever that it is they did here before. To then cry of the sad ending memories.

 

Then you have that mix of newbies or well funded expats/teachers, who basically are paid so have no say in this at all, who are left to scream it is untrue. While reality the picture is clear; all across the board in Thailand it is miserably empty and lacking revenue paying customers.

 

Like any history before a world war, or a tragedy happens; the majority of expats shuts up and pretend their nose bleed: those are slaughtered first in WW3.

I relocate back home, because I can, and good to have two bases, and not get stuck as many do. 

 

Good for wife to optain dual citizenship. You never know when or if it will be handy again, like during covid for instance.

Well I agree with all these comments - I think a lot of the newer or tourists are coming here to take a break from their home problems - when I talk with anyone in the states, they talk about how negative all the people are too, plus here a lot of grumbling about the taxes - and then I see that this is a world wide problem and thus the OECD, CRS. FACTA. FBAR. etc that 138 countries signed onto (OECD) but all agree that there is too many people not paying their taxes due.  From this grumbling here, I wonder how many that fits but to each his own.  As an American, I believe that which was said by B. Franklin over 200 years ago - nothing is certain except taxes and death.  I feel I will not be affected tax wise here but maybe some paper work for the Thai Revenue Department to leave me alone.  Would really appreciate the final on this year's taxes - to see if they make any kind of announcement that ALL expats have to get a Thai Tax ID whether one has no assessable income.  Once heard on a video that this was once considered but nothing came of it.  Good luck to all, hope the bad stuff continues to happen to someone else.

Same reason why so many Expats here are left wingers and support Labor in Aust/UK, Dems in USA, and Woke Libs in Europe. And I also notice a lot more Expats here support Ukraine and Hamas/Gaza.  The reason is they are mostly 'life's losers' (not all, but many) and as you said many have a 'dubious' past. The fact of life is that if you go to the lowest GDP area in any modern city anywhere in the world, the majority of people there vote left wing, and if you go to the affluent areas they vote right wing. That is not to say that all Expats living here are the troubled ones, and a lot depends on where you are when observing them - it varies depending on where you are looking.

Yes. Exactly my point. Why does Thailand attract them? Many come here as they can't keep up with the higher standards back home and so feel more comfortable with, let's say, the less demanding society here. They don't have to try so hard to keep up appearances and can 'get away' with things in Thailand that they wouldn't be able to back home. I am often reminded of what a Korean tv producer I worked with said, summing up the country in just six words - the standards here are so low. That clearly suits many.

I've been an expat for over 40 years and it has been the same oil every country I have lived. You get invited to a dinner party and everyone there is from the same country or region and slags off the natives. Thailand is an easy mark because the corruption here makes it easy to be arrogant and ignore laws. At my doctor's, I am invited in to see the doctor as soon as I walk into the place. I haven't asked for such treatment and I see the glares from the locals who have been sitting there waiting. 

 

If you add to this arrogance the number of people here who drunk excessively every day and you have a heady mixture of aggressiveness and arrogance. It won't be long before the punches start being thrown. Having said that, go out on a Saturday night in Manchester and see the quality drinkers in action.

If this is your experience of the ex-pat community then may I suggest you try and widen your social circle or better still, just stay away from where these types hang out (Pattaya springs to mind).
I have lived here for 15 years and have met many great ex-pats who do literally the opposite of what you are bemoaning but then again I don't choose to hang out in the kind of places I would  likely bump into these people (apart from the odd night out in Nana). I'm active with a lot of ex-pat groups mainly for golf and the vast majority of these people are culturally sensitive, most speak the language and a lot have successful businesses here and are married to Thai ladies and have a Thai family.
I would suggest it's just where you hang out as if you hang out in seedy areas/bars then expect to bump into a few seedy individuals, but I would suggest this is the same the world over. Change your scene and the people will change too.

That may well be the case now but in the 1960's and before many expatriate Brits were of the patrician or upper middle class and had made a deliberate choice to live in Siam.There was certainly no question of them lacking confidence or not being thoroughly at home in British society.They were also at home in upper class and highly educated Thai circles.They had nothing in common with the current British Pattaya oriented expat community - whom they would have regarded as an alien life form.

100,000 tourists visited Thailand in 1979. 30 years later it was around 11 million. 10 years later, 2019, it was 40 million. A quick overview of why Thailand became a prime tourist destination compared to neighbours. 1980's - 

 

1. Vietnam - hostile communism. 

2. Laos - hostile communism. 

3. Singapore - hostile authoritarianism. 

4. Burma - the same. 

5. Malaysia - Islamic majority, authoritarian. 

6. Indonesia - the same, except Bali.

 

Singapore used to have a sex tourist reputation. The government drove it out. Even then it was mainly naval types who took advantage allied with people on long distance stop overs heading to/fro Australasia. 

 

Thailand had the "misfortune" of being one of the few functional governments in the region with an open door policy. Boy, have they paid for that ever since.

Many of the people who post political content on this forum have shallow lives. 

 

No sane person travels half-way round the world to troll themselves arguing with zealots. 

 

I get it, something newsworthy happens ( such as Bidens debate performance this week) its only normal to jump online and join the resulting fray. 

 

But the zealots are mentally ill. I saw someone post 80 plus times on that topic. And we have a few notorious hissy fitting mentally ill zealots on this forum.
