Tell us about the idols of your adolescent self

Recommended Posts

Well we already have the previous topic about the idols of your PRE adolescent self.

So naturally time marches on and now is the time to tell us about the idols of your adolescent self.

For the purposes of this entertainment topic, let's roughly define the age group for this as from 13 through 20.

Your picks will vary wildly based on your current age and adolescent taste in idols.

You may have had several idols.

I suggest a separate post for each of your idols.

Never any idols. Just liked a few I saw on TV. Marilu Henner was one, along with Raquel Welch, Barbara Eden, Sophia Loren, and a few more women. For men, actors I liked were Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird), Steve McQueen (In Papillon, The Great Escape), Sidney Poitier (To Sir With Love, The Defiant Ones, In The Heat Of The Night), Kirk Douglas (Spartacus, The Vikings), Charleton Heston (Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments).

I was a big fan of all the beats (Jack Kerouac, Burroughs, Ferlinghetti, etc.) but to me Allen Ginsberg was a real deal idol. I drove hours in the snow to see him read poetry. Once eating with a friend in a Jewish dairy restaurant on the Lower East Side I saw him with a cute twink and I really wanted to approach him and gush fan stuff at him, but as a I passed by and looked at him, he gave me the a BACK OFF evil eye! So it was unrequited.

Another real idol.

Frank Kameny

I had the great privilege of spending the day with him at age 15 as a student journalist covering a trial where a school teacher had been fired for just being gay. The court held the firing up. But I'll never forget spending the day with a historic figure that I admired.

A case where meeting an idol is not a disspointment (it usually is).

I don't find this very amusing.

But anyway, ever since I was able to read, my idol has always been Squire Western.

I have always aspired to live in the barnyard.

Henry Fielding has always been one of my favorite authors.

a. In almost all instances, the film versions never live up to the readings of the book.

b.  However, with Tom Jones, the film comes almost close to the Henry Fielding novel, written/published in 1749.

c. Also, Squire Western had a delectable daughter, Sophia Western, and  she was simply scrumptious, watching her suck on a drumstick.

I just wish I could read the novel, and also watch the film, once again, but for the very first time.

So, my idol will always be Squire Western.

The Squire has certainly shaped my life for the better.

Thank you, Squire.

When the american west was ' colonized ' there was a native indian tribe that refused to surrender , even being surrounded by enemy soldiers , they did not obey to the enemy and all died because they refused to surrender .

Those were my heroes ... ( I grew up in a s hithole suburb , only son , authoritarian family , no joy ... ) Ran away from family often , was caught again , ran away again ... it was the '70 th ... I was a rebel , did not care if survive or not ...

I sometimes have the feeling that these posts or answers somehow could be used to PROFILE a person... targeted ads when data is sold for profits to 3rd parties

could be wrong

When I was 12 years old, I was studying classical music at the local music school.
One day, at the record shop, a box with 7 LP's was among the records for cheap sale.
After having a quick look at the LP's, I decided to buy the box.
The name was: "Yehudi Menuhin plays Violin Concerto's".
I never heard of Yehudi Menuhin before.
Later at home, I played the Violin Concerto of Beethoven.
Played by Yehudi Menuhin on his Stradivarius, with my headphones.
Hear was standing on my skin like needles on a cactus.
That was pure magic.
Later, I found the box on YouTube, but the magic of the violin was lost in the digital version.
Yehudi Menuhin was for me the only one idol and will ever be.

Yes I liked him, but not for his singing or music, unlike the likes of Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart etc, he refused to become a "Sir".

Another suggested twist.

Were there idols from your teens that are now very embarrassing to admit?

In my case the French author Celine comes to mind. Very dark subject matter such as graphic descriptions of VD clinics and to me a fascinating writing style though I was only reading translations. I went so far as copying his style in my own writing.

I only learned later that he was a notoriously extreme Jew hater.
