August 14,  an electric motorcycle charging station caught fire, early morning in Pattaya. Fortunately, the fire was contained before it spread to the surrounding building, and no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred at 02:30 in a four-story commercial building in the Nong Prue area of Bang Lamung District. The ground floor of the building houses a noodle shop. Upon receiving a report of a fire at the location, Pattaya’s firefighters, rescue personnel, and Pattaya City Police to the scene.

Upon arrival, the emergency responders found flames emanating from the electric motorcycle charging station, with thick smoke filling the area. Firefighters quickly worked to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the building. The fire was successfully brought under control, but the charging station was heavily damaged.

A witness, who was a customer at the noodle shop, reported hearing a hissing sound from the electric motorcycle battery before a loud explosion occurred, followed by flames. Attempts to put out the fire with a chemical extinguisher were unsuccessful, prompting the call to the fire department.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion. It is unclear whether the fire was due to an electrical short circuit in the charging equipment or a degraded battery.

So, was it just a charging station or a charging station is one or more batteries?

Normally, charging stations don't make hissing noises, a failing battery might do that.

And why is such a station, with possibly multiple dangerous batteries, in such a vulnerable location?

So a charging motorcycle caught fire then it expanded to the charging station?

Some clarification of this fire. The fire was in a battery charging station, where removable batteries are place, no electric motorcycle was attached to the charger or involved in the incident.

There is no indication, from what responders have reported, as to what type of charger was involved, but from the picture of the damaged unit after the fire (see below) it was the type that can charge multiple batteries at one tine, rather than just a single battery.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and from the original story “It is unclear whether the fire was due to an electrical short circuit in the charging equipment or a degraded battery.”
