They are not puppets. They  are Muppets. If I were a gambling man I would wager that she will be the least popular PM of the 21st Century. She has nothing to offer, the family has nothing to offer, the entire family and the entire party are morally bankrupt, they are no longer the party of the people since her father sold them out to the army, and this is nothing more than backwards movement, with regressive policies disguised by a youthful PM. 

 

The recent events are worthy of a mass funeral. Thailand might have been the tiger of SE Asia a decade or so ago, having been the 22nd largest economy in the world, but those days are long gone. So, I would say it would be safe to refer to Thailand as an up and coming, developing country, post Covid. I would not be surprised to see Thailand in 75th place in terms of GDP, 20 years from now. There is absolutely no doubt the nation is moving backwards, on at least a dozen levels. And unless a dynamic leader like Thanathorn or Pita is allowed to lead, the great tiger will continue to devolve into a sickly, whiny, hungry little alley cat.

One of the many things Thailand has going for it, is that even in light of such open insult to democracy and the public in general, their apathy is such that the tendency to respond violently is significantly suppressed.... History has shown that serious uprising is dealt with swiftly and in a deadly manner (1976 Thammasat University massacre / 1992 Black May).

 

A populace gets the government it deserves...   and it would be amiss of me to highlight how broken our own democratic process are with the Biden debacle proving a perfect example of external puppeteering. 

 

I hope this is a refreshing and advantageous step for Thailand, but can't help think that this is just one last dance for a megalomaniac.

 

 

 

Very well put! I think you missed out the army's criminal part in causing this mess. T was doing OK for the people even though the expats hated him included me. Some even cheered when the tanks rolled in (not me). The army screwed up so badly (who would have thought it) that turned Mr T into Saint T where if left alone he would have ran his course and the same with his sister. I would say "let the people decide,  but the judicial corruption and biased leanings even put an end to that.

Initially, a meeting of government whips at Thaksin’s residence had agreed to nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri, 76, as their candidate. However, a meeting of Pheu Thai MPs today decided to nominate Paetongtarn instead.

 

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also expressed his full support for Paetongtarn. "All the parties in the coalition government show their spirit in working together to ensure continuity in running the country," said Anutin, whose Bhumjaithai Party is the second biggest partner in the coalition. His endorsement is crucial.

 

Paetongtarn, nicknamed “Ung-ing,” was born in the United States on August 21st, 1986, to Thaksin and Potjaman Na Pombejra. She has a bachelor's degree in political science from Chulalongkorn University and a master's in international hotel management from the University of Surrey in England reported Thai PBS.

 

Before her political career, she was a major shareholder in SC Asset Corporation and held shares in around 20 other companies in real estate, telecom, and media sectors. She has experience as the chief executive of Rende Development Co. Ltd.

 

Married to airline pilot Pidok Sooksawas, with whom she has two children, Paetongtarn was recently appointed as deputy chair of two national committees, on soft power strategy and public health system development, under Srettha’s government.
