Tasmania is this place AFAIAC.

NZ South Island could probably qualify as well but I have never been there.

I have also fond memories of Dorrigo and Bellingen.

As we move through life things change.

I've lived in Singapore, Taiwan, China, Thailand. All were great until they weren't.

Not to say I hate any of them, but they ran their course, but I do have lingering fondness for Taiwan

Thailand obviously still has a draw, still got our house there, but if I had to do it all again I'd probably try to move to Taipei

You brought yourself with you wherever you went.

Not strange at all. They look at western countries and decide quite rightly they ain't having any of that nonsense in LOS. Same as not allowing us to own land. Very wise people.

Yes. Poland's got the right idea:

Thanks I appreciate that, I do consider it a badge of honor to be a Democrat, so I appreciate your acknowledgment of that.

Do they have polish sausage there? May be a retirement option, never been there.

Somebody likes it here. 3-year "Army veteran". How is that possible? Something's fishy....

"Simms-Aur served for three years, and after he was honorably discharged, he said he realized how expensive it was to live in the US. He was receiving veteran benefits — but declined to elaborate on what type — and worked in IT, but felt like he was "scraping by" living in St Mary's County, Maryland."

"Myles Simms-Aur had a $70,000 salary, a nice car, and a stable routine living in Maryland."

The thing is Thailand (specifically Pattaya and Bangkok) were much more livable for me 8-20 years ago then now. Pattaya and Jomtien have become unlivable for me. Way to crowded, noisy and now flooding a lot.

Bangkok is really bad now and holds no appeal whatsoever. It's a giant over crowded metropolis and most of the Thai women I have met here all want to be "Bangkok" girls going to fancy restaurants every night, taking selfies and pictures of their food and aspire to live in a new high rise beehive condo with a small lap dog as a decoration.

All this is obviously subjective to my taste. If I would stay in Thailand I'd more than likely choose a place that is not full of tourists. Someone called them "tourist" ghettos. Pattaya is just that these days IMHO. The Sukhumvit stretch of Bangkok is way to crowded now. So many new condos and hotels have sprung up and the traffic is bad most of the time. 1 hour to go 2 Kilometers at peak times in a Taxi.

I was basically looking for opinions from others about alternatives. But, as is the norm here on AN, things go unhinged pretty quickly with politics and unrelated posts dominating and the original theme lost.

So, if I may again, just request where else folks would go as a long term living alternative. East Europe? Latin America? Other SE Asian countries?

However, I think this post won't bear much fruit. There are too many people who have not done much scouting but have landed here and just stayed and dealt with the increase of tourism and ever increasing immigration issues. I think I may just end up having to do my own scouting and research which has a bit of an appeal for me but I would rather not waste time.

I do appreciate the Philippines experiences. Those were valuable. I may go to see for myself but I have been many times and this time will be more of a "at this age can I tolerate the downsides"

How long have you lived in Siem Reap? I was bored out of my mind there after 9 months. If not, how do you fill your time?

I don't plan on eating that much but I guess Siem Reap is as good a place as any to gain weight and balloon up.

I live in Chiang Mai now which is a much bigger city then Siem Reap.

I pretty much do what I did in Siem Reap, there are just many more venues to do those things in and they stay open later. When I'm not going to the same places every day life is more interesting because there is more variety, even if I am doing the same activities in those places. There are also more people around so it's easier to meet people.

Why type of activities are you participating  in ?

I'm talking about daily life, not particular activities. If you don't get what that means, I can't help you. I don't have a list or a menu to show you.

What places stay open later in Chiang Mai , rather than Sim Reap .

   McDonalds ? KFC's ?

Everywhere gets boring if you have nothing to do that inspires you to get up in the morning and do something!

Even paradise gets boring if there is no meaning, unless you create the meaning of interesting life.

My best time in Thailand, was before internet in a bungalow in the jungle at the beach with electricity from 7 to 10 in the evening.

Read at least two books a week, kayaking, diving, climbing, socializing and slept like a baby every night to the jungle sounds. That was Thailand for me, and that Thailand doesnt exists anymore.

Eat, sleep, do laundry, cook, smoke weed, go to watch crappy live music, watch US news and post on internet, edit photos, grocery shopping, chase slutty backpacker chicks, smoke weed, X bar,  choke it,  go to Temples, eat, hang out, watch football, go to Bangkok to satisfy my filthy perverted desires......

I started doing Bangkok trips also while I was there. I kept finding a reason to goto Bangkok.

Dude there is always a reason to go to Bangkok. If I was living in Vermont, I would go to NYC. Got to get some action once in a while.

I forgot to mention Pool Day in my salt water pool.

Be careful if you walk up that sidewalk or trail along the canal late at night that leads to angkor wat. A bunch of prostitutes came out of the bushes/trees at me in the dark. They seemed predatory, just moving towards me without saying anything.
