Thailand's electric vehicle (EV) market is facing significant challenges as major carmakers consider opting out of the government's incentive scheme due to a market slowdown. The Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT) suggests that manufacturers might abandon subsidies and reevaluate their production strategies.

Launched in 2022, the EV3.0 scheme offers benefits like reduced taxes and subsidies, but requires local assembly by 2024 with specific production targets. Chinese manufacturers have expressed concerns about these requirements, questioning their effectiveness in boosting sales amid economic difficulties, according to EVAT President Suroj Sangsanit.

Subsidies under EV3.0 include up to 150,000 baht for electric vehicles under 2 million baht, and 18,000 baht for electric motorcycles priced below 150,000 baht. Automakers must adhere to a strict production rule, manufacturing one locally assembled vehicle for each imported car, increasing to a 1.5 ratio if production starts next year.

In October, sales of battery electric vehicles dropped by 49.7% from the previous year to 3,717 units, while traditional car sales fell by 27.8% to 11,562, according to the Federation of Thai Industries.

Brands are considering price cuts to boost sales, but such tactics have previously failed as buyers hold out for further reductions. The decision to relax production requirements rests with the National EV Policy Committee. The Federation of Thai Industries is expected to urge the committee to reconsider the rules to aid struggling manufacturers.

Despite these hurdles, EVAT predicts sales of 82,000 electric vehicles this year, representing a 14% market share, up from 12% last year, with expectations of reaching 15% next year. As the industry navigates these challenges, the future of Thailand's EV sector remains uncertain.

Somehow, I find this EV vehicle hype all over the world funny.

Lots of people want to tell us all that EVs are easier to maintain and so much better in so many ways.

Those are people who have invested i solarpanels on their roofs and think they can sell back power to PEA

Be honest , its a classic example of not building an infrastructure prior to rolling out a product. EV's may be a great product (in the future) but its being rolled out 20 years too early

I would like a small electric one to run to the markets so I could buy turnips if they were available in Thailand.

If interest shown by people at the Motorshow is any guide .... it looks like EV sales will be up next year.

Of course visits to stands may not translate to sales, but the busiest were the Chinese EV displays.

We're in the market for a new car, but it probably won't be an EV due to our specific needs, but the cars with the most interesting designs and innovative features were definitely the EV's.

People do show quite a bit of ignorance when it comes to EVs.  With the anti EV propaganda, it's not a surprise.   AN is a fine example, as some folks simply being a wee bit ignorant, and understandable, to downright stupid, and or, anti EVs, with no knowledge or at least good research of the facts.

EV owners on AN, point out the pros & cons.  If one does the research, and thinks for themselves, listen to owners of, then a decision to buy or pass, should be easy.

Much of it, is country dependent also.  Personally, I would stick with the major producers, in TH, with a bit of track record, and dealer network;

MG (bias of course)

BYD

GWM

Your post alone shows some of the ignorance, especially about BEVs.  Charging & fires, seriously, as if not debunked enough on AN for TH.  Yet, like yourself, repeat what you read & hear, based on no facts.

I guess you'll keep buying overpriced, underperforming vehicles :coffee1:

I see the envy of EV-owners when I thunder past them on M3 on my way from Suvarnabhumi to Ban Chang (they can't try to outgun me cause then they would have to turn off their aircon on their way to Rayong to save power)

To rub it in, I select the fullest volume on the V6 Ranger Raptors adjustable sports exhaust when I fly by them.

The feeling is great.

🙂

Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0 V6 ... 0 - 100 kph - 6 secs

The MG ZS EV ...  0 - 100 kph - 8.2 seconds, in smooth peaceful quiet comfort.  With the AC on.

Now, repeat after me, 1 thousand, 2 thousand, and now we're both at 100 kph, and I'm 2 secs behind you. :coffee1:

Actually, I stopped at 90 kph ... is that a sped camera up ahead ? :cheesy:

MG ZS EV price ฿599k or ฿829k after the promo.

Congrats to you, for paying ฿1,949,000, and you win, for only about ฿1M, to get there about 2 secs before me :cheesy:

Put that in perspective, contract to build our house was ฿1.1M on land that cost ฿76k.   So you have a truck, that can also do 90 kph, and I have a SUV that can 90 kph also & a house, for the same price.

Let that sink in, take as long as you need.   Don't hurt yourself.

Just trade in the MG ZS EV for the MG4 X-Power, still only about 1.1M baht brand new and you'll beat him to 60 by over 3 seconds 😉

In other threads, you are bragging about how your electric toy has faster acceleration than ICE cars, so I nominate your post for troll post of the year.
Actually it is difficult to distinguish between all your posts which one qualifies most

What if your Thai wife leaves you for somebody younger and more handsome than you? Or maybe she just leaves you? Say goodbye to the house.

PS: It's 5.8 seceonds 0-100 km/h without mods.

Together 18+ years, and I'm 70 soon.  Don't think she's going anywhere, and TBH, could care less, as long I get the dog.  I have a usufruct anyway, so I doubt if I'd be going anywhere.

Marriage #4, and do you think I worry about little things like a relationship ending ... :cheesy:

I would just rent one of my daughter's houses.  It's only money :coffee1:

In the same price point.   Not Apples & Oranges, but nice spin.   I'd expect something almost 2M to have some redeeming qualities.   And 2 whole secs, seriously, for only 1M baht.

MG ZS EV ... it's a family SUV, and one of the slowest BEVs.  Economic balance of speed & range, not build for speed, or workload.  The speed limit, mostly, is 90 kph, and gets there plenty fast, if I actually wanted to.

When I've discussed the underperformers, I believe that was discussing Yaris, or the Cross s.  Apples & Apples

You guys are a trip.  You really have nothing better to do.  Trolling .. you the kettle or the pot :coffee1:

Yup, I am happy with my MG ZS Ice vehicle, does what I want for now, mainly only city driving at less than 60kph..and spends most of its time stuck in wall-to-wall traffic at 0kph.......LOL

Loved our, 2020 model, and wife misses the red :cheesy:  Wasn't available in 'D' model of BEV.

Got the 2022 BEV model when they upgraded the 2019 model, and the 240k incentive helped motivate us, along with solar at the house.

At it's current rate, I should be driving this same vehicle after 10 years 😜

Do these EV's do well with short mileage trips daily, or are they depleting their batteries too quickly during the week? Also, how about when stuck in traffic with the AC cranking for long periods of time? Just trying to figure out of they make sense more for longer drives at speed, and not so much for short city commutes, or vice versa.

We rack up about 20k kms a year.  One good thing about living almost rural, no traffic jams.

BEVs are fairly consistent.  Actually in stop & go traffic, the 'regen' sends energy back to battery, so letting the car slow down, instead of braking, and you get more range.

On the highway at speed, 90 kph, there little if any difference in range, till going faster.   There really aren't the many stretches of road that allow 120 kph.   Cruise at that, 100+ and yea, you will sacrifice some range.  I guess if doing a lot of R/T to Pattaya, you'd probably notice, as one of the longer 120 kph stretches, BKK - Patts, but not really far enough that you'd need to charge anyway.

AC is minimal draw, and not worth even thinking about.
