An 80-year-old Belgian man was brutally attacked and robbed by a group of teenage assailants wielding knives on Christmas Day in Pattaya.

The incident occurred at 00:36 on December 25, near the entrance of The Village Pattaya housing estate in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. Police Lieutenant Wuttikorn Plodprong of Pattaya City Police Station received a report about the attack and robbery involving a foreign tourist.

Senior officers, including Police Colonel Navin Theerawit, the Pattaya Police Chief, as well as local investigators and rescue teams, were promptly dispatched to the scene.

At the victim's residence, authorities found Mr. Richard Ander M. Van Bogaert, a retired Belgian electrician, covered in blood with a severe head wound inflicted by a sharp weapon. Rescue workers provided emergency first aid before rushing him to the hospital.

An initial investigation revealed that Mr. Van Bogaert's wallet, containing approximately 7,000 baht, was stolen.

Ms. Pornthip, 38, the victim's caretaker, told police that he had just returned from a Christmas event at a local entertainment venue.

As he was walking back to his home near the housing estate, three motorbikes carrying six teenage males surrounded him. The group attacked him with knives, striking his head before stealing his wallet.

The assailants fled, leaving Mr. Van Bogaert bleeding on the roadside. He managed to crawl and stagger to his home to seek help, and Ms. Pornthip immediately called the police.

Police Colonel Navin Theerawit ordered officers to set up roadblocks and search for the suspects along potential escape routes.

Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage in the area and interviewing witnesses to determine whether the attack was motivated solely by robbery or if there were other intentions.

Authorities are committed to apprehending the culprits and bringing them to justice in accordance with the law.

The guy that started that thread thought it was a joke. The joke is on him

Was this random or was this a targetted attack? We will probably never find out as updates are scarce.

Time to thaw Bronson and his sidekick Wildey to deal with these scumbags.

Attacks on foreigners like this have been rare in my 20+ years coming to Pattaya but there seems to have been an uptick in them recently.   Maybe one gang gets away with a successful grab, others follow.

In my years here I've never once felt threatened but that doesn't mean it can't still happen, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What a horrible thing to attack an 80 year old man. They were 6 of them and could have easily just taken his money and vanished. What was the need to beat him up so savagely? I hope all of them are caught, shamed in public and then jailed for a very long time. 😠

The answer is, no they don't.

The majority of Thai mwn don't do that.

A very small minority of Thai's do, and that is usually blown way out of proportion by the press and the social media.

Damn, these gangs on bikes are always dangerous. But who walks around those quiet areas or beach areas at midnight anyway, it's trash there always with junkies and stuff.

I would find out who did that to me and make sure they get a lot, repeated, violence, themself. I'd spend a million baht on it even.

Let's say he was a little more spry and put up a bigger fight they may have killed him. Sickening to watch, hope they catch the little bastards.

The publicity may help keep it to an even smaller minority.

You're living in a different world. Your Thia microseism doesn't show you what is going on in the real world.

Duh! The majority of any society don’t attack others! And it’s only blown out of proportion if it isn’t you!  Your comments are self centered

All I saw in the video was an opportunist mugging. No drunken disorderly behaviour from the Belgian. He was taking a wallk  back home from a Christmas event at a respectable time. Stupid Thai kids, a disgrace to their family and community. Not a good look for Pattaya as a family tourist destination. Police will have to get on top of this situation.

Out for an intoxicated walk at Midnight?

Am I reading this correctly?

Hmmm.

That doesn't sound wise for an 80 year old.

Truth is if he had taken a taxi or Grab home from his Xmas party we wouldn't be having this discussion now. 😆

If you think this very rare, isolated incident is a yes vote.

Time for you to get out of Thailand before you are attacked.

Bye, bye 👋

If it had been me then it would have maybe been worse. I carry a sharp knife. So maybe with 6 they would have probably stopped me in my tracks but a couple of them maybe would have went to the hospital also.

Solely robbery is my guess, he was spotted as an easy target by cruel youths and flowed outside.

Hope he recovers quickly and resumes a normal life.

Police must find these six thugs and put them in jail.

A shame what is happening in Pattaya so often in the past year. Attack after attack on foreigners. Gang assault attacks happening monthly. Yet, still they claim it is safe and a family friendly city. Seems the only family that is safe is the Thai ones because their kids seem to be the ones doing the attacking. Good thing they got this on VDO. If the police actually do something to find them they have it all recorded.

Ooooh.

I bet those hooligans are afraid of a fat, drunk 80 year old with a Swiss Army knife.

If you walk down  Beach Road in Pattaya you can see an almost daily even in front of the Thai police station by Central Festival.  The police are hard at work stopping every motorbike driven by a farang while stopping no bikes

driven by Thai's. So, we know that the police here are good at targeted enforcement. They attack farang with official uniforms, the rule of law and ticket books. The only difference between this daily mugging by the police and the poor 80 year old bleeding from knife wounds is the knives. The mugging has the same effect. Farang are relived of their cash.

Don't believe me?  Take a walk on the beach and see for yourself. Many Thai people and a majority of the police see farang as "Walking ATM's" Welcome to the Land of Smiles.
